New Zealand Travel Bubble Announcement

And people some how think a Vaccine, which won't have 100% efficacy will somehow magically open borders. If states like WA can't accept people from NZ or for that matter the rest of Australia without quarantine, where the chances are probably <1 in 500,000 that someone has and is infectious with COVID, what chance will there ever be of someone coming from a place, say the US, where the chance of having it might be 1 in 500, even a 90% effective vaccine would only reduce the chances to 1 in 5000 ....

South Australia joins New Zealand coronavirus travel bubble

South Australia will open its borders to travellers from New Zealand, effective immediately, and allow 12 recent arrivals already in hotel quarantine out into the community.

"I'm pleased to be able to announce with New Zealand people arriving in SA, they will no longer be required to quarantine," he said.

"We're also happy to receive direct flights from New Zealand.

"The health advice has been assessed by direct communication through our Chief Public Health Officer with New Zealand authorities and there is a level of comfort there in terms of the extent of COVID-19 that allows us to make this decision."

VIC are already in the bubble ... by default really. They never shut their borders.

Some of the Kiwis into Vic were apparently well briefed, and prepared:

Shearing Contractors Association of Australia secretary Jason Letchford confirmed New Zealand shearers were on the first flights out of New Zealand to Sydney, and they later went on to catch a flight to Tullamarine Airport in Melbourne.

"Anecdotally I know they were on those flights and there was nothing illegal or incorrect in what they did — they followed process and were sponsored by their employers and had the correct permit to travel from metropolitan Melbourne to rural Victoria," he said.

"The workers and employers should have been applauded by Premier (Daniel) Andrews for making the effort to get here so quickly.

"They shouldn't have been poo-pooed by the Premier, as they are actually coming into the state to work and are trying to keep the economy going."

Right yes, he should have looked up the names on the manifest to see if they had applied for Victorian permits.

The manifest of incoming international passengers into Sydney that the Victorian Government definitely has access to. That if they had access to, would have left them without a single argument in this instance.

It's interesting how if anyone who finds the situation to have been very poorly outlined by the Federal Government (to the point of being deceptive) were to suggest that the flow of processing incoming NZ passengers should involve a process that does not exist today they're rubbished, yet the above which is entirely impossible to ascertain as you'd never know about who arrived or what they'd applied for passes as commentary in favour of the approach.

We have a son in Melbourne pity we would have to quarantine on the way back 🙁

Yeah I think I’d expect that border to be open early Jan (Dec would be nice though). Although if there’s a loophole to get into SA for example then it’d be better to do 14 days there and be out and about then fly to NZ than actual Managed isolation in NZ.

I really think Ardern should jump into another Aussie National Cabinet meeting to hear where each individual state is at rather than negotiating one by one and DG Ashley Bloomfield should get up to speed by joining with the AHPPC.

I think the main states they’ll take issue with will be NSW and VIC.

So could I go on holiday to NZ if I wanted?
jase05 is right. No, unless you are a NZ citizen. In both situations you need to do mandatory international quarantine in NZ before going anywhere else in NZ.

There has been one AFFer that got an exemption to enter NZ even though they were not a NZ citizen (they had business interests in NZ) and got a permit to choose their own mandatory quarantine hotel location (coming from a place in Australia with zero local cases for months). But it seems this is a very rare exception.

Unfortunately at the moment we would still need to do another quarantine inNZ. Hopefully that changes soon.

Even NZ citizens need to do managed isolation in NZ

Would be good to have NZ nonstop flights return although I’m not sure about demand to SA. Currently Syd airport is winning in that dept. But from SA to NZ If I had the choice of NZ quarantine vs spend 14 days in SA prior to quarantine free arrival back in NZ I’d be there! Means spending money for 14 days in SA but hey I like my wine and would love to explore further. I’m keen to get back to KI to see how they’re doing. Reality is I’ll get back for a trip even if I’m in NZ. Love it!

Really keen to hear Arderns answer on this one or if they’ll just open to all the states they want to open to at once. I think they will take the latter approach. No reason not to IMO.

@cambriamarsh I hear you. I may actually get my partner to fly to Oz first then head back home. Told him to ask work if they would have any restrictions in place for return to work. Despite govt rules sometimes work place rules have differed 🙄

There are precedents globally of having some variability in allowing access from different states. Singapore have much freer criteria for entry for those "who have remained in either Australia (excluding Victoria State) and Vietnam in the last consecutive 14 days prior to their entry". (i.e test on arrival, if negative, no restrictions, vs anyone who has spent any of the last 14 days in Victoria needs to spend 14 days in hotel quarantine, including transit passengers).
