But sadly customs/quarantine still takes an age, if they could just fix that.. Here's an idea for them: one queue that splits into multiple "nodes" would be faster than the current virtual free-for-all/lucky dip.

Currently I see it as no worse than Australia.

The leftmost line usually goes fastest in my experience

I noticed this on my most recent visit, after an inordinately long wait in the rightmost line behind a plane load of people whose luggage seemed to consist almost entirely of endangered species and suspect substances.

Agree that Sydney and Melbourne can also be very, very slow.

I tend to notice it is "whichever line I am not in" - the leftmost line also gets held up with crew and passengers in wheelchairs/mobility issues. I think the line just to the right of the leftmost lane gets processed by the most customs officers but is still a "Australians/New Zealander passport" line so doesn't get sent to the x-ray machines as often either.

I suppose I will still have to remove my glasses and juggle passport, customs form, glasses, laptop bag etc. Most of the time something end up on the floor.

If the queue isn't too long I just line up. Sometimes it's just as quick

It's substantially worse in NZ than in Australia. At least here when you get an express pass you can use it at quarantine. Unlike in New Zealand where you have to line up with the masses. Implementing an express lane would be a big step forward.

The express lanes seem to come and go, so that's not a guarantee. As for NZ, I hardly ever wait more than a couple minutes.

I've never waited more than a few minutes at AKL coming or going... Always using an express lane on departure, never when landing there.
