New Zealand car rental = expensive?

I just got an email from Hertz announcing their global sale running to the end of the year. Supposedly it was 20% off in NZ. Put in my dates and the price was exactly the same even though the 'discount' code was applied. As our rental starts just before the end of the period (28th Dec) I thought perhaps it didn't apply - even though the website will usually tell you if this is the case. Tried new dates solely in December and it was about $100 cheaper. So it's the "no discount" sale unless they've jammed their prices up before offering this discount.

Edit: just did the original dates removing their sale code and replacing it with the CEB Five Stars Rewards Member code and it was $NZ200 cheaper than their "20% discount".

Thrifty still gives a better discount for NRMA membership!

What is the CEB Five Star Rewards Code you refer to? Is it a general 5 star members code? If it is, would you mind sending me the code via PM? I didn't know there was a 5 star ode, despite being 5 star for a coupole of years!

There's no actual code that I can see but just below where it says:
Discount/CDP/Club Code
there's a drop down menu where it appears as a choice along with "Hertz SEP Global Sale Web" which is the current promo and also "CEB FS Rewards New Member".

Ended up getting a Highlander from Thrifty (was trying for a RAV4) for $200 less than Hertz. Still too much money but I've noticed that availability on some cars is already diminishing so thought I'd better book something.

" James Blond " in Kelston, Auckland are very reasonable, will deliver to airport etc... Nice cars. Check them out, I use them all the time :)

Just got an email from Hertz offering 3 days free if rental is for 10 days. I was hoping it was 3 days free in every 10 but it maxed out at 3 days. I'd booked a car with Thrifty who had the best of a bad lot of prices. When I booked under the new promotion I saved over $NZ300 which wasn't bad. But then they offered me an upgrade from a RAV4 to a Highlander for $23. I thought that ended up being about the same price as Thrifty so I ignored it but then clicked the link for the hell of it and found it was only an additional $23 not $23 a day!

Anyway not a bad deal for a bad time of year for car rentals.
Glad the companies have reasonable cancellation policies unlike airlines!
