We are disembarking from a cruise ship on morning of 27 Sept (around 0830 hours) and then flying back to Oz on QF4 from JFK around 19.20 hours on the same day. We will have luggage.
Looking for advice regarding on luggage storage and suggestions for activities to fill in the day.
Any advice appreciated.

Hilton has a couple of hotels that offer day use, 9am-5pm. There’s one by Central Park for USD89 (++) or downtown for $129 (++).

Might be an option if you want somewhere to park your things, go out sightseeing for a few hours and then come back for a shower before heading to the airport.

I really enjoyed the Transport museum in Brooklyn - very easy to get to

Obviously the Met Museum and the Cloisters if you haven't done either of them but the Cloisters is a bit of trek

Just note that there is a lot of construction and consequent delays on the roads at JFK just now.
With that sort of time frame I would grab a day room at JFK, the HGI Queens is perfectly reasonable. Take the air train to Federal circle for the hotel shuttle.
Shower, leave bags and head back on the shuttle to air train Fed Circle and into Manhattan.

You don’t really have a lot of time with that layover.

Thanks for the warning - appreciated

The exterior of buildings in New York higher than 5 stories have to be inspected by an architect or engineer every 5 years. This mostly explains why there are so many hoardings and interruptions at street level.
