New York on New Years - Hotels?

Hi,

A friend of mine has decided to they want to travel to New York for New Years, they booked the flights but need hotel options, I've told them it will cost around $3k to stay in the city for around 5 nights at a basic hotel, they are not fussed where they stay, just as long as its cheap(ish), staying a bit outside the city is a option but what would travelling be like getting to and from the city after the celebrations.

Any advice would be helpful.

i stayed at the Marriott Times Square for NYE a few years ago...biggest mistake ever...other than NYC in the dead of winter being mindblowingly cold (we were 3 aussies and 2 californians, we froze our bits off), we had trouble getting in or out of our hotel after 5pm...the cops block all the streets around Times Square and treat everyone trying to cross the barriers like they are terrorists...the cops were worse than the crowds, all of whom were drunk and dirty...i found the entire experience was quite dangerous

i know that's not what you asked, but i wanted to share anyway...basically, it doesn't matter where they stay, they'll have to hang around Times Square for around 6 hours to see the ball drop...and after the 'festivities', they'd want to hope they are walking distance to their room or they'll be trampled

We are going for NYE in NYC(love typeing that) and are staying in an apartnent about $350 per night one block to Times Square on West 47nd st.booked through Tripadvisor, give me a wave, I'll be the one with the balloon.

We were in NYC last new years eve. We used Hilton Points on the actual NYE at Time Square, as it was rather expensive. However, the nights around it were much cheaper, paying around $100++ /night, and stayed at Hilton Garden Inn West 35th (near Macy's) and Hilton Fashion District.

We were part of a group of 6 Adults and 5 kids (Ages 3-15) staying at the W Times Square (cnr 7th and Broadway) last year. Cost was $600 per room per night. The NYPD shuts down the Times Square Precinct from around 10:00am on NYE. Access to your hotel during the shutdown can be gained by simply flashing your room key. None of our group had any issues with this.

NYE was a blast as we had tickets to Madame Tussauds who have a good family friendly event that runs through NYE into the early hours on New Years Day. We were able to also see a side on view of the Ball Drop. Getting back to the hotel was relatively easy. The NYPD saw we had a bunch of young kids and chaperoned us through the crowd for the 10-15 minute walk back to the hotel. Everyone in our group thoroughly enjoyed the experience and would recommend it.

Stayed at the Four points by Sheraton Times Square in 2011/12. Was only $300/night for 5 nights compared to $450+ elsewhere nearby. Is about 2 blocks walk away so easy to get to and not obstructed on the night. Nice little hotel.

We have 5 nights in NYC but are pulling out and going to DC a couple of days before NYE......we did it 16 years ago and stayed at the Royalton....really close to TS.

This trip we're staying on the UES at The Surrey.....won't see the ball from up there!
