Just saw this on TA and though it may be useful for budget travellers. I looked at May which is sort of high season and it is still USD72 w' light brekky.

Edgy area, but attractions: LIC Beer Project, The Baroness, Crescent Grill, Dutch Kill Centraal, Big Alice Brewing and the Hostel "The Local" has a great lobby bar filled with visiting foreigners and often live music. Also if you go into Astoria you will find lots of young people hanging out at all hours - best blocks in Astoria/Queens are 34th Ave, Broadway, 31st Ave and 30th Ave all between 31st Street and Steinway.

Using Wyndham members rate is $60 pn.

I've stayed in a hotel near here 2 year ago. Great location just outside the CBD. Usually at least 50% off the prices you'd pay in the CBD. 5 mins by subway and you'll be in the thick of it.

For some people, 25% of the rate in Manhattan it is worth it, and as Dr Ralph says, it is quite close on the subway. It's far from north to south in Manhattan, and this is just 'sideways'. Can be as few as 2 stops to Macys.

Long Island - only marginally NYC.

Agreed. I stayed at the Sleep Inn which is just across the road from the Howard Johnson in February for ~$60AUD for a room with 2 king beds and a city view. Breakfast is decent enough to keep you going for a few hours, so for me, nearly unbeatable value in NY.
