I'll be in NYC in June and am trying to decide where to stay. I was last in NYC in 2003 and stayed in some hostels but am keen on a hotel this time.

Ideally my budget would be $200 a night at most but this is giving me hotels with communal bathrooms and bad reviews or nice hotels in Long Island. An American friend has said to avoid Long Island.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

If that is US$200 try Hilton Garden Inn Times Square, alternativly look at New Jersey only 15mins from NY Penn Station by NJ Transit.

Yes, I suggest using priceline.com and bidding for a hotel. You can find advice on priceline at betterbidding.com.

karen - when we were in NY in 2008 we stayed at the Wellingtn Hotel, which is is in Midtown East - right next to Carnegie Hall, and just 2 blocks from Times Square and there are plenty of diners right neareby.

Not a $200 a night hotel - but as you mentioned, can't get much in that price that is good enough to recommend.

Try getaroom.com or venere.com - should get a standard room for $250US a night - not bad, I believe, for NY.

I booked 4 August nights @ the Staybridge Suites Times Square for 160USD per night pre tax for a queen suite, including free wireless, daily breakfast, and coughtail receptions. The hotel was opened in April.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

I've just booked three nights at the Holiday Inn Midtown using Priceline.com, for US$145 per night, which is about US$175 including taxes and charges. For comparison, the advance purchase rate was US$160 (plus taxes). I'm sure you could get an even better deal if you included more areas of Manhattan.

If you're going to use Priceline, make sure you understand how it works completely before bidding. As well as the site mentioned above, also check out BiddingForTravel.com - Message Board Yuku to get you up to speed.

Have a Look at Starwoods promo Better Tomorrows at Starwood Hotels and Resorts across North and South America. I have found that the Four Points Times Square Midtown is usually the cheapest, at around $180 inc tax per night which is cheaper than the promo mentioned above. Brand new hotel, found it excellent for the price.

Expedia have a $10 off per night coupon when booked via the US site, which is 10SPRING.

I took a look at the Four Points - seems like prices have gone up a bit - in August (when I hope to be in NY again) prices start at $205US per night - which by the time you add all of the taxes comes out at around $260us - in June when the OP said they were going to be there, prices start at $350us + taxes - must be high season:

Starwood Hotels & Resorts

Looks a good hotel, though!

Voyages - when did you book/stay there? I like ichotel - but best I can find is for a lot more:

I stayed at several Hilton chain hotels in July last year in close proximity to each other, all really good and I notice a couple of random dates these are around the $210++ rate. Namely Doubletree Chelsea, Hilton Garden Inn Chelsea and Hilton Garden Inn West 35th St (right near Macy's and Empire State, this was the best, especially if you can get a room with view of the ES Building). Thoroughly recommend any of them

Another tip if you are there for a weekend and don't mind moving, the downtown hotels, closer to Wall Street tend to go down in price a lot on weekends as business traffic drops. Worth considering moving down there for weekends (not that far by subway, especially on express trains and close to Soho & Tribeca).

The Newark options is also reasonable, but a little painful. The Newark Hilton Penn station hotel is directly opposite the station which has 24hr trains into midtown on New Jersey Transit and PATH and 24 hr trains to downtown on PATH.

Thank you for all the suggestions. I need to work through all the posts and come up with a short list.

I also saw the other similar thread that has been revived and am checking out the ideas on it.

If considering Hilton family hotels, the MVP rate may assist.

Just reminded me as well, if you are a member of NRMA/RACV/etc makes you eligible for the AAA rate, entering the 16 digit NRMA card number into the AAA field when booking on the hilton website will generate these rates (although often prepaid rates are cheaper anyway). Not sure which is cheaper MVP or AAA rates.

Also try looking at offers at Select Your Site

We booked a special at Affinia Manhattan for $169 per night for a one bedroom apartment including breakfast. You have to be quick because the specials don't last for long.

You'll see my quotes there - they were at a corporate rate for the Grand Hyatt @ ~$225/nt. End September so tail of peak season i presume but a great location.

Dont forget to factor in cost of getting around depending on where you stay - the advantage we had was we could walk to 99% of the stuff we wante to visit (did a taxi to Old WTC site and Century 21 but walked everything else from Grand Central Station where GH is located.)

If one is not precious about catching subways, you can get a pass for about $8USD/day per person, which is great value, and they are fairly safe and reliable. This gives some flexibility re location. And really, subways are part of the whole New York experience anyway. (note the pass can also be used on buses, useful for going across town).

... Not sure which is cheaper MVP or AAA rates.
When available MVP are generally cheaper (seem to beabout the same as advance purchase 20% off) and are flexible (often cancellable until the day before, check before booking).

Note that with RACV/RACQ/NRMA AAA"Show Your Card & Save" rare, all you need to do is enter the 3 digit international code that's under the symbol:

dependant upon what time in June - Hotel Pennsylvania - average $ 220- 230 per night
directly opposite Penn Station - all lines and Amtrak, directly opposite madison Sq garden, short walk to Times Square and Broadway, Empire State ......in the middle of the garment district of New York

Hi JetLagged, I made the booking a couple of weeks ago, to stay for 4 nights in August. The price has indeed increased a fair bit (it was $184 pre tax for a queen suite last week).

It may not suit you however can I suggest you have a look at Jersey City Bed & Breakfast. Gets top marks in feedback & reviews on the net.
