I am visiting New York for 6 nights in mid October. Priceline offers discount hotels in the following five areas..Bayside, Elmhurst, Flushing, Kennedy Airport and La Guardia Airport.
Should I steer clear of any of those areas, which would be preferred (as in reasonably close to the major attractions)?
I am prepared to pay approx USD80 per night, travelling solo, with hotel being used as a 'base' only.
Any advice on New York will be appreciated, thanks in advance...

What are you actually trying to do/see whilst in NY? It is going to be a hike from some of those places to get to Manhattan...

Thanks Simongr, I see what you mean. I need to be nearer the Manhattan attractions, so will have to upgrade my expected 'spend' on accommodation (up to say USD130/150.00 per night).
Any suggestions for basic accommodation anyone?

I suggest hotel 373 on 5th ave. Cant get much more central. Located at at 373 5th Avenue.

Hi BARNABY,
I'm in New York for a 14 night stay late December through to early January and just booked my accommodation on Priceline a few days earlier.

Bid was $130USD per night, quality was 3 stars or greater, areas were all on Manhattan but didnt include the downtown region.

Bid was accepted at Park Central New York which is located 870 7th Avenue at 56th Street. Very happy with the location and price and seems to be quite a nice Hotel, 3.5 stars quality. 71% recommended on Tripadvisor.

Hopefully this helps.

Cheers,
Blake

try Radio City Apartments - you can't get any more central! Although may be slightly over your budget - but you can save on eating out, as they are fully self contained, and you can walk to everything instead of forking out money for transport.

I would tend to agree that with a 6 night stay, you may be better searching for apartments. Some of them you can get for 110-130USD per night, or even cheaper with a week long stay. And of course you get the benefit of being able to have breakfast, lunch and dinner at home which can save a lot of money!!!

Well again just a warning about apartment rentals in NYC-most private rentals are illegal so only use apartment hotels such as Radio City.
I am going to throw one out of left field-Flushing is not that silly an idea for staying but check out the hotel and in particular make sure it is close to a number 7 subway station-its Manhattan terminus is times square.Flushing has the best chinatown in NYC.There are plenty of cheap eats. Here is a link to flushing info-

Although you will waste some time commuting it really isnt that long. The trip will cost you $US2-though you can get various discounted metrocards. As well as terminating in Times Square the 7 subway stops at Grand Central so you can connect to anywhere in Manhattan.you would also get to see a different area of NYC to most tourists. No matter where you stay in Manhattan you will still be commuting to some of the major attractions any way.
Another thing to consider is a Big apple Greeter-a free service where a local will show you around an area of NYC.Here is that link-
Welcome to Big Apple Greeter

i'll be looking for accommodation in time square for 13/10 to 17/10 - is it too early to start bidding with priceline?

ive got a champagne taste on a beer budget :D

Just be aware that Priceline 'bids' don't include taxes and Priceline charges, which are often in the 20%+ range. US accommodation prices also exclude taxes, but when you compare the two, it may make more non-Priceline choices palatable (and you may also need to change your budget if you thought it was like Australian pricing).

Many thanks to all who kindly gave me information on NY accomodation. I am now much better versed in what to expect and likely prices.
Thanks again!
