New Lounge in CNS

And it's an upstairs (above checkin) landside access (a la MEL), MKY size Lounge? Shouldn't take too long (construction should start soon) and I very much look forward to seeing the final product.

It's defiantly airside access.

No, I expect it to be airside once it's open. There's a long corridor that has airside/landside access and they've put in a temporary doorway so that they can make landside access easier during construction.

With access near the current QP? Anything to get one out of the current CNS terminal is a good development in my mind! The sooner the better.

And it's .... MKY size Lounge?

Does the question mark signify a question over the size or are you making a statement?

From my limited travel to CNS, the airport always seems considerably busier than MKY. I'd have thought a MKY size lounge would seem a little short-sighted in the predicted numbers who might use it.

I seem to remember David Flynn on AusBT writing that it would be MKY-size, but am unsure (hence the question mark)

Busiest period is late afternoon with 3x73H and 1xATR on the tarmac at once.

CNS and MKY actually have very similar Business customer traffic numbers, with Cairns averaging 283000 a year while MKY has 274000.

In future, will this figure expand though? CNS is the sort of destination which will have some flights changed over to TT and I can't see any new destinations coming online from either VA or TT out of CNS...meaning a flatline of pax (I might be totally wrong though - feel free to correct me)

More ATRs will allow VA to offer the milk run some competition, also increasing the TSV-CNS frequency which shows significant demand.

Even so, how many flights would this work out to? I know there's a need for competition on the milk-run, but how many extra flights would they bring onto the TSV-CNS route - 2, maybe 3 more per day? That's up to 204 extra pax/day of whom maybe 30 will have Lounge access (if the flights go out full). I'm under the impression TSV is more of a hub for VA and the ATRs...

VA Cant fly CNS-WEI/HID due to government regulations. I would love an ATR72 based in CNS flying CNS-TSV 2/3 x Daily with a rotation to MKY or maybe HTI in between? I know a lot of business travellers that day trip to TSV weekly. Two of whom fly VA back to CNS due to the better product but cant fly to TSV due to the limited schedule.

(p.s E190 to OOL please VA!)

Currently QF link have 7 versus VA 1, so there is significantly room to grow and of course VA have the advantage. There is also the option to go to PNG, which will come eventually.

I most definitely agree that the Cape York routes make sense...but these won't come about until late 2014 at the very earliest. Don't know about a HTI rotation (they already have their full service product going down south and have no northern connections from CNS, unlike QF/JQ) - MKY is more likely. Even MOV.

The milk run is headed south, WEI/HID would in fact not make sense if it were not regulated, its out of the envelope for economic ops on the ATR and poor traffic to boot (hence a Q300).
Dont forget VA operate to Moranbah ex TSV, so having more equipment in means better aircraft sparing/flexibility.

I think the comparisons to MKY came from the level of amenities to be provided, not necessarily the number of seats available. MKY is VA's 'regional lounge' model.

My return from WEI is a Q400, as are both flights to/from HID?

I also understood that the MKY reference was in relation to the 'type' of lounge rather than capacity. Check in told me last week it would be by the end of the year, although maybe given the delays they thought if they have a longer time frame then it might be done by then.......

Have tried again today to look down the landside corridors but cannot see any results from any activity that may be going on in either the area overlooking the tarmac or car park upstairs. When I checked last week, there was a scissor-lift sitting at the end of the landside corridor behind the new temporary wall/doors (they ones I previously posted a picture of). Haven't spoken with any local staff to see if they can provide further clarification.
