Airberlin will open four new long-haul routes and increase frequencies on existing flights between Germany, the USA and Cuba from May 2016. The new routes are:
  • Dusseldorf - Dallas/Fort Worth
  • Dusseldorf - San Francisco
  • Dusseldorf - Boston
  • Dusseldorf - Havana

Havana will be Airberlin's second destination in Cuba; they already fly to Varadero, where Lufthansa subsidiary Eurowings recently also began flying to.

airberlin press – USA and Cuba: airberlin will start serving four new long-haul destinations from Dusseldorf in the upcoming summer season

What's AB long haul J like? This will create interesting RTW options when combined with the CX DUS-HKG service.

More expansion of the Etihad empire, getting indirect access to TATL routes in way that some of their rivals - particularly EK will struggle to. Recently announced that Air Serbia will commence Belgrade - New York services as well. Baby steps. I guess AZ is constrained for now, by being part of the JV with AF/KL/DL.

AZ is exiting that JV as soon as it can, within 2 years.

it is supposed to last until 2022 but I read that AZ was going to exit early. I shall try to find a link for you.

Interesting new routes from AB.
DFW in particular is winning plenty of new routes at the moment :)

I'm still dumbfounded they gave up on DUS > YVR a few years ago....I know so many people that used that route, even with additional positioning flights from other parts of Europe.

AB J is probably not in "market leader" territory, but the small J cabin on their A330 fleet is supposed to be fairly good. Seats are lie-flat. I wouldn't have any issues flying them.

The seat is the same as the old EY J seat. Fully flat but a bit narrow. It's upholstered in a firm leather, rather than the softer leather found on the QF A330 seat.

I flew J between TXL and ORD in August. Booked Y, but got an op-up at the gate (suspect because i'm OW Sapphire).

Same seat at the old EY J seat. Service was efficient, but the flight attendants weren't particularly engaging. Catering was surprisingly good.
