EU to lift flight ban on carry-on liquids ? The Register

The European Union has certified a liquid-detection security scanner that will allow that £20 1.75 liter bottle of Bombay Sapphire you bought at the Duty Free shop to come aboard your flight in your carry-on bag.

I take issue with the poor choice of gin in the article, but this sounds really neat. Hopefully this scanning technology works as well as the article indicates!

Bombay is ok as a G&T gin, but you're right - there are better, and I wouldn't waste my DF allowance on it (having said that, I couldn't be bothered picking up DF most of the time anyway) :)

It'd be fantastic to see some better screening tech rolled out though. I'll be a happy man when I don't have to ditch my toothpaste (~125ml) for those short TT trips with carry on only.

The only gin I buy at DF is Bombay...

Hopefully this will come to Oz as well especially as I lost my deodorant today as it dissent have a "lockable" cap. It made it from SYD ok...

A great idea... Assuming that it will also fit on 1.75L bottles of Tanqueray!

+1 does a lovely G&T at coughtail hour. The sooner they bring that scanner here the better. Possibilities are endless, a return to being able to bring larger perfumes and body lotion etc :)

You really need to migrate up to Plymouth or Tanqueray. Or if you're feeling like something a little more smooth, try Hendricks with a large slice of cucumber with your tonic:)

Sapphire is ok, but it's certainly not that good.

Almost *anything* is better than Gordons. *Almost* ;)

Yes, apart from Beefeater, which is possibly the most objectionable concoction to ever have the word "Gin" printed on the label.

I'm having a wild affair with Navy Strength Plymouth at the moment, but I always go back to the reliable green bottle.

I do wonder how this will work though in practical terms. Does this mean we can finally go back to the way things were and just leave it all neatly packed away? Or are we going to have to present each bottle/tube/container separately from our carry-on to be inspected and scanned by this device?

I would guess the later, with separate scanning required. The early models I've seen pictured had a bottle sized hole to insert the items in while being tested.

Good news! I wonder how we can find out which airports are LAG friendly? It coughes me that even domestic UK has LAG rules, too!

I too, am a green bottle man *peers over to his shelf that has a few bottles bought cheaply in SIN*

Wish that was operating at LHR T5 when we went through last month. An FA on QF31 had given me a bottle of red, but I had to give it back as we were transiting to CDG and I knew it wouldn't get through LAG checks at T5. :(
And having a bottle of Aussie red might've made FIL happier in France (not that he was unhappy, just overwhelmed with all the different reds there!).

Ten or Hendricks for me.
After a few recent overseas trips now have 3 bottles of Hendricks (bought in AKL and SIN) - average about A$42/ bottle

OT but
I did a trip around France, Spain and Italy a few years ago. We tried bottles with the first couple of meals, a some expense and disappointment, until we discovered Vino da Casa. Basically we found the house wine to be of consistent and acceptable quality compared to buying bottles of anything.
