I purchased a tik with Jetstar last week-HNL- MEL for Jan (have a qantas ff MEL-HNL) and at the time of booking it stated baggage allocation- 2x 32kg. My friend was booking her ticket today and during the booking process it came up with a banner stating-changes to Luggage allocation for travellers to HNL- 1 bag 20kg.

Will this apply to my booking or will they honor (I think they should) the allocation that I was promised- 2x 32kg!

You are entitled to that which applied at the time you paid for the ticket

Although the booking paage indicates that JQ allowances have changed, the USA allowance under baggage allowances on the JQ page still does state

Despite the above, each Passenger travelling on a JetSaver, JetFlex or StarClass fare to or from the United States may check in up to 2 pieces of Baggage for carriage in the aircraft hold at no additional charge. The maximum total combined dimension of the two pieces is 270cm (106 inches), with no single item exceeding 158cm (62 inches).

Yes I did see that also- but Jetstar are very slow in coordinating and updating links...and making their own rules. I have been burnt before by Jetstar. I have printed my booking and it does state HNL baggage allowance as 2 x 32kg. I guess Ill find out Jan 16!

From my own experience. (yesterday)

Purchased a birthday sale fare to Honolulu back in April for travel in October where, due to the legal inability (I believe) for Jetstar to offer their "no baggage" fares, they imposed a 20kg one piece limit on luggage for this special fare to Honolulu.

I flew on the 23rd of Oct to Honolulu where I was reminded at check-in that this was the still the case. (Eventhough there is no mention on the invoice or itinerary. It does however list the general 2 x 32kg allowance - more as a general note)

My return to Sydney was the 30th of October where I was over by 13kg (my wife and I combined). I was going to play the "dumb no clue traveller" who thought he had 2 x 32kg allocations. At Honolulu airport the check-in queue ( 2 1/2 hrs before the flight) was 40 pax deep and one of the HNL ground staff decided to call out for Qantas Club pax to check-in seperate - which is usually never the case for JQ.

To cut a long story short; jumped the queue, baggage wasn't even weighed at the QC check-in (same as star class check-in)

Very bloody lucky, because we overheard at least one heated exchange in regards to the 20kg jetstar allowance vs the 2 x 32kg IATA or similar allowance.

(On a slightly different skew, I was interested to find out that in regards to food n booze, jetstar loads up in Sydney for both legs. So if pax get extra hungry Sydney to HNL then the HNL to Sydney pax could miss out - which I did. I guess carrying all that extra food n booze costs them more in fuel but guarantees paying in AUD?)

I have noticed loads have been very high of lately on the HNL runs. Yield cant be too bad, as there is only ever 1 or 2 HNL sales during the year.

JQ International also have an enormous increase in traffic, and load factor went up also. Mabye JQ International is going to do well now...

Load factor is high probably because there are a lot of un-experienced flyers
got tricked with a QF flight number, also they code share with AA and JAL (I think)... everytime I flew with JQ intl I would heard someone complaining "I thought I am flying Qantas...my travel agent told me......where is my free drinks / snacks ?????" ,

I flew with them SYD<=>HNL back in May, the ticket price was $550AUD return all inclusive, I believe it was the cheapest price, anyone seen cheaper ??

Earlier this year during "take a friend for $4" they made a Technincal Mistake. Instead it was, take a friend for $4, plus a further 50% off.(just on SYD-HNL-SYD though..)

Worked out to be around $280return. Although this lasted for around the first hour of the sale, basicalle when it just relied on people browsing at that time, which I was one of them. JQ didn't call asking for extra cash which was great. I read somewhere on here or elsewhere that someone else also snapped up this quick deal. I would have posted, but wasn't a member at the time.

Not even the 1cent fares I got can beat this amazing dealgot here!

Yep, got that "technical error" deal to HNL as well. Given the amount of **** Jetstar has given it's online customers in the last 2 - 3 years - getting that "error" was karma.

I hope it's still 2 x bags for 32kg. I'm booked to Hnl (transiting for the mainland with Snowboard) in Feb. It's been a nightmare coordinating the onward flight because AA cancelled the flight I was supposed to be on the mainland and there isn't enough transit time.

I flew SYD-HNL-SYD back in May (did the HNL-SYD in July) and the plane was full both ways (Starclass included). The (older) lady next to me was very upset she was a QF codeshare flight and was 'horrified' to be flying JQ (gave me a chuckle).

I also got the $550 return Birthday sale fare which was great as I flew on to LAX with UA for only US$167 return (back when the AU was fairing better).

So all up approx AU$750 return to LAX!

I notice Jetstar have added some clarification to the website in regard to bookings made prior to the change (glad I booked a couple of months ago!!)

Passengers travelling to / from the United States (HNL) – Bookings made before 1 November 08

For bookings made before Saturday 1 November 2008 (AEST), each Passenger travelling on a JetSaver, JetFlex or StarClass fare to or from the United States may check in up to 2 pieces of Baggage for carriage in the aircraft hold at no additional charge. The maximum total combined dimension of the two pieces is 270cm (106 inches), with no single item exceeding 158cm (62 inches).

Each piece of baggage which is above the Checked Baggage Allowance specified above will be charged AUD 96 per piece (departing from Australian airports) or USD 72 per piece (departing from Honolulu).

Yes- saw the clarification- and printed it before they change their minds!!!
Thanks!

Moose, I did the same as you too - printed it straight away and attached it to my booking confirmation as proof.

We booked in August to travel to HNL in February so luckily will still have the 2 x 32kg allowance. We usually do lots of shopping in Hawaii and have always needed our 2 bags each so with only 20kg in future we won't go back to Hawaii for a while, certainly not on Jetstar.

I bought two tickets on the 14th Oct Mel - Hnl for May next year with the baggage allowance of 2 x 32 kilos pp...Today's sale states that tickets purchased after 1/11/08 will have the new baggage alloance of 1 x 20Kg applied. My question is are Jetstar allowed to do this when Qantas still state on their web site that booking thru them for the USA 2 x 32Kg's still apply. I know they are separate businesses but though all travel through to the USA with any carrier had the standard luggage allowance of 2 x 32Kg's...Have been lucky with all my previous trips to HNL to have upgraded at the airport to Star Class, last year $300 pp one way and $250 US on the return, also had all points and SC applied too, does anyone know the cost currently?

Sorry to ask the question again but as a regular traveller to Hawaii and mainly for shopping are Jetstar allowed to impose this new bagge restriction? Seems that any other flights including Qantas entering or departing the USA still allow the 32 kilo rule x 2 bags..we are lucky that we booked prior to Nov 1 so get the extra luggage allowance this time but just wonder about the validity of such a rule...will be the last time that we use Jetstar guess

I don't think that there is anything that stops them. Other airlines such as Cathay Pacific impose a 23kg per bag limit on economy passengers to the US.
