New EK lounge Melbourne

Now the big question is what will happen with the old lounge?

Could this be an opportunity for QF to bring its J lounge upstairs next to the F lounge and provide natural daylight to those poor buggers using the J lounge?
Excellent idea.

Im amazed, a new lounge built in secret and then unveiled with no actual announcement. What the?

I'm not sure all airlines make a big deal of their overseas lounges, but I agree I'm very surprised a new lounge opened in MEL without anyone on AFF knowing about it.

Air NZ are opening a new lounge in MEL in 2016 or 2017, once they complete Brisbane. So that could be an option?

We can wish, right?

Agree! Seems so strange that there has been no promotion about it at all!

The old lounge could get a bit busy when there was one 380 and two 777's going out at night, so with the SIN flight upgrading from a 777 to a 380, they might be anticipating a further increase in lounge usage.

Did none of our MEL Int regulars notice that there was a construction site there in recent weeks??

Have just phoned Emirates who have advised that they have not shut the Melbourne Lounge nor have they relocated or opened another lounge at Melbourne Airport. :D .......

And also a surprise to Emirates as well. ;)

The new space was known. Heck, TomVexille worked there. But no one had any idea EK would take the space...it was assumed NZ or EY would take it.

Would the space be big enough? The current QF J Lounge is a decent size and I imagine significantly larger than the (now) old EK lounge. Could be wrong though.

Would have thought a similar size however it would have a much better aspect than the current lounge.

Absolutely from that point of view. However if EK have gone for a larger space with their new lounge I would be surprised if Qantas went any smaller than their current space (although I guess I've never seen it packed, it can get busy though).

I'm guessing a lot of Qantas pax with status might be taking advantage of the EK lounge anyway.

Which costs QF a fair bit per use, doesn't it? May be an incentive there for a more attractive QF J lounge. As long as it doesn't signal the end of the QF F lounge as a separate lounge with F perks...
