Main problems with having two separate roads before was the foot traffic crossing the road, which really held up the flow.
Dividing up the area into drop-off and pick-up zones will be of little use, and will be ignored.
While I agree that people will invariably park as close to the terminal as possible, regardless of if the road is drop-off/pick-up only, with the new overhead walkway I think the simple solution would be to eliminate pedestrian crossings and erect fences, so you can't cross the roads and stuff up the traffic, and you're forced up the walkway.
What BNE really needs is:IIRC the BNE D Master Plan, put back stupidly by at least 5 years, was to design a full two-level terminal with upper level departures and lower level arrivals.
- One level closest to the terminal for departures.
- Another level closest to the terminal for arrivals.
- Another set of drop off / pick up zone(s) further away from the terminal, with access to the terminal provided by a walkway which does not require walking through the roads corresponding to the two zones listed above.
Essentially what I was thinking... and of course, a two-level terminal would be great, but not sure how feasible it is to do that. If only the second runway/apron area could be sped up in terms of construction, I'd think building a new domestic terminal and then refurbishing/closing/designating the old/existing terminal as LCC would make much more sense. Of course, if the second runway is 6 years away, you have to question whether that time frame is too long?
