New Baggage crackdown starts this week at VA

I'll try again on my return flight...

Doesn't sound great...

Trans Tasman the speeds aren't great 1-3mbps but it works well for basic tasks.

Looking at flight status both flights this weekend won't have wifi and one will be the 737-700.

They checked my carry on luggage and small laptop bag twice. BNE-DPS and return.
Had to check in my carry on luggage on the way back as it was 8kgs instead of 7, which was fine for me as it was tagged priority and came out amongst the first bags at BNE.
Interestingly, flew Jetstar SIN-DPS and they haven't checked anything.

Do they charge you if you're caught with an overweight bag? I'm considering checking my bags in at the gate to bypass the check in queues, they've been a disaster lately.

Only if you've exceeded your checked baggage allowance.

So if you've got no status and have already checked a bag then you'll be up for a 2nd checked bag fee.

If they ping u at the lounge premium entrance/check-in im guessing its a bit of a hassle having to go back to check luggage in.

I guess this is basically what this "crackdown" is all about really. VA still showing its LCC tendencies.

I don’t think that’s the case. They are enforcing their rules... just like Jetstar and Qantas are. I’ve been under when I’ve been weighed on VA and I haven’t seen people being charged on VA personally yet - only on JQ have I seen people fined.

A post up stream suggested they saw someone being charged $70 by VA but no one has worked out if that was the fine or just the excess baggage charge yet to my knowledge.

Several flights and not stopped once. Suspect it's more hype than reality.

Not being checked over several flights is not an indication of anything other than that they are not checking every person boarding on every single flight. I dont believe they ever claimed to be doing that, not to mention it would be very impractical.

Exactly. More hype than reality, as I said.

Hype on whose part? I didnt see where anyone said that it would be anything more than it is.
The premise of the thread. I'm one of many who have pointed out it isn't being draconially enforced. What's so hard to understand about that?

Surely the premise of the thread is that there will be more of an emphasis placed on policing carry on luggage by virgin.

That you havent personally been checked doesn't prove that to be false. No one said they would be checking every person on every flight, or even that every single offender would be caught and punished. That is what i would call hype.

Personally I'd be very happy if every airline policed this more. I never carry more onboard in size or weight than I am entitled, for many reasons.

But when did I say my evidence was proof? I used the term suspicion. Backed by most others on this thread. Really.

Yes thats true and i'm the same. The main thing is that at least its a move in the right direction.

If anything, if more people believed there was a decent chance of being stung with a fee/fine then the "hype" would serve a good purpose :)

I generally carry very little onboard and will usually put luggage in the hold. It's only when 'commercial' or 'national' security require me to have sight of my papers that my carry-on matters. But agree, it's positive to see greater scrutiny.

So they have payment facilities at the gate to charge travellers beyond their allowance?
