New Amex statement credits

Given that the 'travel credit' on Amex cards is now more of a cashback after spend, is everyone's reading that we can just spend the $5/600 and then get the two separate cashbacks afterwards?

The annual travel credit is not a cashback and is used by booking travel via the amex site.

Given these cashbacks often stack (i.e. Net-a-porter), I think it probably will for the Amex Travel Credit.

It is now a cashback. You book and pay in full, then a few days later $450 appears on your account.

I'll look into it, thanks. That sounds more flexible than the original system which limited the accommodation you could book to those listed on the amex list.
@muppet, how does amex know it is a travel booking?

Conditions of the offer indicate you can apply your travel credit money to this offer:
Payment can be made with a combination of your American Express Card and Membership Rewards points or Travel Credit, for eligible card members that are enrolled in such programs. However, the amount charged to your Card must be $500 or more to be eligible for the offer.

I think the consensus is that it is less flexible - you still have book through the Amex travel site, but you also now have to spend over the amount of your (would-be) credit in a single booking.

I did read the terms, but haven't used a travel credit yet under the new system so was unsure on exactly how it may play out.

I’ve booked a hotel on FHR that is fully refundable. If I was to get a refund, would my travel credit come back to me? I want to cancel my booking and book a better hotel since there is the new 600/150 offer.

I just received my AMEX Plat and activated this morning. Rang up to see if I could manually get this new cashback offer added but not joy. Can't see any offers yet so will have to wait and see if it pops up..

I think there’s some confusion @prozac but my reply was in the context of the Amex Travel Offers spend 500/600 get back 100/150. For the Plat Charge travel credit, you still have to book via Amex Travel, but it is no longer a deduction applied during the transaction, it is a cashback applied at the statement.

Some better offers;

American Express Travel - 500 / 100
Avis - 200 / 50

Just be aware that the Amex Travel offer is for hotels and cars only. Excludes flights.

With the old system of a credit off the fee you paid, it clearly stated that you don't get it back. During Covid they were bending this rule.

Now the credit is cash back. They'll probably try claw back the cash back. You could always call and ask though.

By the time I clicked 500/100 it was gone!

I got the $600/$150 on my Platinum. Registered and made a booking. I immediately received an email stating:

Thank you for using your American Express Travel Online Amex Offer with your Card ending in xx_xx.

If your transaction meets the offer terms, your redemption should appear on your statement within 15 business days (however it can take up to 90 days from the offer end date).

What stops someone from making a booking for 12 months away and then cancelling it 6 months ago well after the money has posted?

As per T&C:
  • Credit may be reversed if your qualifying purchase is refunded or cancelled.
Note:

1) The longer the time period after the expiry of the offer, the less likely this will be reversed.

2) Difficult to claw back the money if you've already churned your card.

It should be stackable, but until someone tries it out, we won't know for sure. So in theory with the $600/$150 offer and the $450 charge credit you could book a $600 hotel and get $600 back if it stacks.

Got a reminder email today regards MyAmexShop. I am not much of one for these but noticed the Lenovo link had 7.5% discount. Cross checking, Cashrewards offer 13% off Lenovo atm. Just thought to let you know.
