New Amex statement credits

I've been following this thread with interest as it seems to be the first time I've seen a USA type opportunity for MSing in Australia. It's just like the American method of buying Vanilla reloads (preferably in a category bonused store), then loading them onto a Bluebird (similar to the Coles reloadable card which has been mentioned here) which you can use to pay the original credit card or withdraw. This deal has long since died off in the USA. The Vpay deal isn't great value in the long run other than the Amex statement credit because you are basically buying MR points at 1.8 cents each assuming $5.45 fee for 300 MR points. It's a good way to make a minimum spend to get a credit card sign up bonus if you can't make the spend in your normal activities. The trick is to find a store which sells Vpay that has a category bonus like Edge 3x in supermarkets and will let you pay with an Amex, then offload it through the Coles reloadable card, otherwise it isn't a great MS opportunity. We needed a washing machine so got a good deal this weekend using 2 Amexes and I bought one Vpay which I will use on my rates. Still have 2 registered Amexes to go, might get a couple more Vpays or maybe a new travel 2 in 1 laptop if HN has a good deal.

The problem with the Coles card is the velocity at which you can "unload" it for true MS. $300/day max in cash, and I know of people who have smashed the withdrawals and got their cards shut down.

Not bad to turn non-Amex spend into Amex though if you can find a sustainable way to load it.

"Smashed the withdrawals" - you mean $300 per day?

Worked fine on an IPad Air. Though as was bought for under $500 it was only one full $300. The partial was fine too.

Where did you get the Air under $500? I went to HN today and 32GB was $546 and they wouldn't budge. Had to buy a case to make the order over $600 then paid with 2 cards.

Weird shopping experience with them. When trying to pay with 2 amex cards, the girl had to ask a manager but couldn't get him. Then another guy came in and said they could do multiple payments but only 1 amex card allowed. I told them to cancel the order and that was when they said 2 Amex cards were fine. The girl couldn't understand why the manager had an issue with over 1 amex card. Glad he wasn't there. Got amex emails pretty much straight away.

Couldn't complain about this 32GB Air 2 + Case for $400. TRS will bring it down under $350.

My reading of the offer suggests you can spend it in multi transactions - maybe you could spend another $100 on your second card and still get the second credit?

Well of course and I did, which is what I said.

The partial just meant that one $300 transaction was for the Ipad Air in Full, and the 'partial" was part Ipad Air and part other. The Second Card was for the remainder, a minor item, plus a GC purchase to get over the $300. GC transactions are always done separately.

So whether using your card to only pay for Apple products, or partly for them in the one transaction with it makes no difference and Apple products are not excluded from earning towards a $100 rebate.

.

It was an IPad Air 128GB for $499. As it was the IPad Air and not the IPad Air 2 the Chadstone HN had some on clearance.

I have found some great clearance buys. ie a Nokia Lumia 930 for only $79 was a real bargain.

They had no issue splitting my $900 over three cards. Could've been because it included their 1 year extended warranty, which is highly profitable (sales rep did drop the price from $109 to $69 without trying though). Even managed to get the GST back on the warranty through TRS, as the receipt showed it part of the iPhone price.

I added their product care to make the order over $600. I kept declining until it became $28 (from $89). For this branch (Broadway), I read on Ozbargain that the manager was quite funny about Amex promo. He didn't want to sell even gift cards and told customer that he would inform Amex that the transactions were for gift cards which were eligible. I thought buying products would be fine. He wasn't around when I was there anyway.

Same. I used 5 cards with no issues.

I used 9 at Bondi. Cashier lady roller her eyes a bit and complained that so many people were doing it. I mentioned that they were picking up nearly $3000 in business from me that they wouldn't have gotten otherwise so maybe the 15 seconds of work wasn't that big a deal.

I do now remember why I don't shop at Harvey Norman now. The whole sales experience is just terrible.

Two Amex issued card HN credit for Vpay received. However, offer still not marked as redeemed .... interesting ...
