The international roaming packs (starting at $20) seem to be in addition to whatever plan you're on, is that correct? So, for example, you'd be looking at a minimum of $30 ($10 being the cheapest sim plan, plus $20 for the cheapest roaming plan), have I got that right?

Yes. Although the roaming packs are valid for 365 days.

I am with Amaysim, and about to purchase one of their roaming packs.
Any further feed back lately from users?

I have used it over the last 12 months and found it very reliable. As it is important I can be contacted on my own number I prefer to use this in conjunction with free wifi etc when away.
Had excellent service and coverage in Europe, Scandinavia, South Korea, Singapore, Dubai, UK, Iceland and Baltic.

Agree with the above! $25 or whatever it is. 50 mins calls, 50 texts, 1GB data. Incoming texts free.

Use all of the above for emergencies. WiFi at other times. So far has lasted me through two trips, and am half way through my allowances.

Emergencies include responding to fraud alerts from my AU credit cards (confirming spend, don't lock card!).

Used internet a couple times to compare prices for goods o/s v Australia (almost always cheaper in Oz!)

Been very happy with it.

I originally thought to get the $70 pack. 9GB 100 mins and 60 SMS. Maybe I will not need it, although will use it for gps for 2 week’s driving in the UK and it does last 365 days

You might want to do the sums on a cheaper package and supplement with a Data only eSIM. One for the UK or a Euro regional plan would be something like US$5-10 for 7-15 days per 1 to 2 GB.

Although I appreciate some peeps will like the ease of a single roaming plan.

I’m planning on finally ditching Optus before my next OS trip because their $5 (roaming) can inadvertently trigger while you’re OS (their tech is a bit flaky). Although, I’m otherwise only paying $29 pm (inclusive of 100 GB pm).

From what I can see online and comments here, this looks like a reasonable contender. an eSIM option frees up my physical - which could be handy. Sounds like even without the roaming pack I should still be able to receive SMS (an essential criteria). One of the lower bundles then will let me send SMS (as required) and make the occasional call if necessary.

The relatively low data allowance isn’t an issue, plenty of eSIM providers to shop around as required - IME, no one size fits all eSIM provider, so I’m used to checking which is best for each country / region.

Are there any negatives to these plans? What sort of network coverage / speeds are peeps seeing OS?

I assume there’s no “wifi calling” - which would be really useful - although Optus doesn’t even offer that yet either.

only used data rarely, but it was fine for say accessing email or internet banking, Google maps. Didn't try to stream movies or anything.

Thanks. As I pressed “Post reply” I thought the “speed” bit was redundant as I’d already said I‘d probably use a 3rd party eSIM for data…

Users of these packs who have data, minutes or SMSs remaining can extend their validity beyond the 365 days by purchasing another pack, which might even be smaller/cheaper than the original pack. Amaysim call it "stacking". It took me three phone calls to Amaysim Customer Service before I got an operator who knew about this option. I paid for a new pack in the same phone call, and my account now shows the extra data, minutes and SMSs, and a new expiry date 365 days from now. Happy!

Yes, that was our reading of the bundles - that there’s effectively a “rollover” of unused credits (data, calls and text).

So contrary to my earlier comment, that $70 / 365 day plan (or whatever the going rate is) probably is a good investment and then top up based on future usage of calls/text. I’d still be planning on using a 3rd party eSIM as the primary source of roaming data (should work out cheaper) and use amaysim data as a backup.
