Last year was one where again there was reason to praise the sky gods for this site. I had to rent a car in the USA for a week of running around the Midwest, and when i asked here, everyone said Netflights!

So I did. I got a big Chrysler 300C at Midway and I had the time of my life in this implausible car. Big, full of goodies, ugly in a nice way, a tonne of room to carry bags and boxes. Just a totally nice drive in a land where most of the rental cars are as boring as batsh*it. For an incredible price.

So I was disappointed to hear that Netflights had dropped their car rental earlier this year.

And gladdened that they had returned it. But when a booking was essayed, it returned me no results.

In April I'm flying into Boston from Schipol (via a four hour transit in Heathrow – Champagne Bar, here I come!), and I want to drive north to Montreal and Ottawa, then to Chicago via Niagara.

A Mustang is what I'd really like. And yes, I'm middle-aged and balding. But I'd settle for a 300C again, guessing that I could sell my wife on it using the Blues Point Tower line (If we're inside it, dearest, we won't have to look at it. It's actually a huge bonus.)

But Netflights said no cars were available.

Od course there were cars. Going to the alternate website or even the rental firms' gave me a range of cars. Yes, a 300C was available for a week. $1000+, thank'ee kindly!

$500 for a Taurus, which was about as far downmarket as I wanted to go. Some of these American cars are horrible beasts, but the Taurus will probably be our next Falcon, so it would probably be OK. A front-drive Falcon. Geez.

But I didn't make the booking. I was hoping Netflights would get over whatever glitch it had.

And it did. Yesterday I hopefully typed in my details and it came back with a range of cars. In GBP, but that's OK. Just multiply by two for AUD.

The prices were so low that I rechecked my dates to make sure I hadn't selected overnight by accident. Yes, I could get cars for a low low price. And OhMyGlory, there was a 300C on the list for £170. And, and, and a Mustang for £212! I nearly died then and there.

I snapped it up, of course. Once I had triple checked dates and details.

Subject to confirmation, it says, but even if a Mustang isn't available, I'll be able to get a 300C, surely?

It works out to less than AUD400, given the exchange rate. A week of tooling through Canada and Chicago with my wife in a Mustang for $400 plus gas. I can live with that. We can drop the top and have some fun. :)

but it is off again- I've been trying for 2 weeks- even phone calls, where their staff acknowledge problems ongoing- does anyone know of similar GREAT site

Hi Ian,

Arguscarhire dot com is another good one. The down side is you do not know who they have linked you up with until you actually make the booking. The two times I've used them has been no issues though.

Netflights did not even respond to my most recent enquiry :!:

THANKS!!
Will try them , but netflights is unbelievably good rates- even in Australia half price, incl xs only $300!!
cheers Ian

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

These people also have very good prices (although I've never personally used them). www.Carhire3000.com. If Netflights wants to play hardball (or stupidball) I will certainly use them.

Strange to hear of the current problems at Netflights though, as I've just received (unsolicited) a copy of my docments for my booking next month in the USA.

But, by now, I have the contacts at Netflights in Preston, Lancs, UK (or Gold Medal Travel Group Plc - Travel Agency Extranet for the uninitiated).

Don't know how they can screw things up as much as they seem to (they are part of the Thos Cook group) but they do...

Thanks Clifford
Will look them up too- net flights still down on inet- over 2 weeks now
cheers

Recent Netflights experiences:

Booking process on Thursday afternoon though to the final part of a 2 day car hire mid March failed after entering CC details - however amount was pre-authorised. :-|

I immediately sent an email with as much detail as possible. Responded on Saturday Evening / Sunday morning with vouchers etc - 5 emails comprising one apology "we're gunna fix it" and two each of .pdf receipt and .pdf "voucher".

Emboldened by this I tried for more hires on the Monday, but each crashed out multiple time during the search. Car hires were for later March. Interestingly April hires searches did not crash.

Emailed on Tuesday regarding the issue but no response by Friday morning, so I have now booked these hires with argus as indicated by straitman.

This information was found in the following thread (in this very sub-forum):

Interesting that I ahve just been looking at reantal rates for a hire in DRW next week and Hertz give a better off the street rate that argus :!:

Thanks ian woollard,

It is now seven days since I sent an email to Netflights and they promised to respond within 48hours :!:

I assume they do not want the business and am going to look elsewhere for my bookings. :(

I have sent Netflights another email and pointed them at this thread so we'll see if that gets them moving or not :!:

Please let us know who you select - I am looking at a one way rental from SEA - SFO in OCT. Thrifty want additional $200US (one way fee) on top of weekly/daily rate.

AV8,

I am currently looking for options within Oz so that may not be much help to you.

I have used Thrifty in SEA (via Netflights) and I would not go that way again by choice. The Netflights part was fine but Thrifty were not. They tried to sell me options that were already included, they are off airport, unhelpful, pushed the size of vehicle down, the car was not full of fuel, they did not provide a map and the cars were well used. There may have been other issues but they do not come to mind just at the moment.

Straitman,
Thanks for the tip - I would welcome any other tips/experiences from fellow AFF's re my car rental proposal - why reinvent the wheel!

I seem to have worked out how Netflights works and don't have a problem with them any longer.

For example, I made a booking with them a couple of days ago for DUB later this month. I knew I wouldn't get an automated response (this option has been deleted from their "new" website on the basis they couldn't make it work), so I just emailed my contact there and received a response with my voucher etc by return email.

If you are looking for a response to a (nebulous) question, you'll never get it (just phone). If you make a booking online and then contact [email protected] you should get a response in 24-48 hours. I always do (but I always CC my contact there who I obviously cannot disclose for privacy reasons).

So go ahead and make the booking and don't worry...

Hi
I finally used carhire3000 for us and europe bookings, as cheapest and online- in contrast to netflights- still off line for US
also needed car spain to portugal but no-one except hispacar.com allows, so used them-all very cheap!! insurance excesses removal in europe was fairly reasonable
argus was much dearer
cheers
