Hi all,

I am just about to reach the next OW level, but I still need some miles. As I am coming to Australia for a few weeks trip, I wonder what would be the cheapest way to get some miles with Qantas. I need either:
  • 1185 miles in AF
  • or 1775 miles in CDIJ
  • or 3550 miles in YBHKLMS
  • or 7100 miles in GNOQVW
I will probably need to do this during a weekend (in late July/early Aug) and from MEL. Any tips would be greatly appreciated!

Are there any min mile earnings on the scheme you are collecting to. Which scheme is it

If there is a 500 min earning per sector, you could do MEL-CBR-SYD-CBR-MEL in business class for AUD1000 and nicely complete it

Hi Dave,

Unfortunately I will get only the actual miles flown, but thank you for your suggestion.

A Qantas super saver fare books into S,V,L,R,M. Don't know which class you get booking on internet so could be a good idea to call and book over the phone paying an extra $38.50.

Just some examples that appear the best looking options assuming you can book super saver into S,L,R,M. There are other combinatons which may end up cheaper but may require overnight stay adding to cost. Flights or airfares may not be available other days.

Sat July 29th MEL-SYD-AYQ-SYD-MEL total miles 3,586, super saver MEL-SYD-AYQ $430 leaves MEL 06:00 arrives AYQ 11:20, super saver AYQ-SYD-MEL $388 leaves AYQ 13:35 arrives MEL 19:30. Total airfare $818.

Sat July 29th MEL-SYD-PER-MEL total miles 4,161, super saver MEL-SYD-PER $522 leaves MEL 8:10 arrives PER 13:20, super saver PER-MEL $343 leaves PER 15:10 arrives MEL 20:30. Total airfare $865.

Sat July 29th MEL-ADL-DRW-BNE-MEL total miles 4,650, super saver MEL-ADL-DRW $414 leaves MEL at 7:10 arrives DRW at 12:15, super saver DRW-BNE-MEL $535 leaves DRW 13:30 arrives MEL at 21:15. Total airfare $949.

You can reduce the above even further if you are prepared to spend the wee hours of the morning in DRW airport. Save on hotel charges in MEL.

Sat July 29th MEL-SYD-DRW-MEL total miles 4,337, super saver MEL-SYD-DRW $424 leaves MEL 17:00 arrives DRW 23:40, super saver DRW-MEL $387 leaves DRW Sunday July 30th 05:35 arrives MEL 11:55. Total airfare $813.

AY. Actually, now that you asked, I rechecked Finnair's page and noticed that the R and W class will also give me 100% of the miles. So I actually need:
  • 1185 miles in AF
  • or 1775 miles in CDIJ
  • or 3550 miles in YBHKLMSRW
  • or 7100 miles in GNOQV

Your best bet is still super saver fares.

For your situation I feel that flexi saver, fully flexible and business fares would be much more expensive.

You're right. I just booked the MEL-SYD-DRW-MEL trip you suggested and selected the cheapest super saver fares (one helpful pal of mine dug the class from expertflyer) and they were indeed in the S class.

Thanks a lot for your help, JohnK.
