I need some advice from anyone apple tech savvy out there..

WHAT I WANT:
- A hard drive that can connect direct to iPad to put new movies on to iPad whilst on holiday (without computer connection)
-Hard drive needs to be able to save photos and videos off memory cards from cameras as well.. (direct again, no computer connection)

I swear i found something a month or so ago, that had a built in battery that you could plug in to the iPad direct or plug a memory card in to the hard drive to copy photos across.. But i cannot for the life of me find the thing on the internet again..

Anyone got some suggestions?? Hopefully i have given enough information? If not just say!

I nee something with a decent hard drive 500gb minimum..

Thanks heaps in advance!

The camera thing is called the Camera Connection Kit, http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC531ZM/A

It can import images from an SD card. I don't think it'd work with a hard drive though, AFAIK iPad can't operate as a USB Master.

Incidentally iPhoto on the iPad is fantastic for editing and correcting photos on the iPad. It's very powerful though has a slightly non-obvious interface. There was a fantastic session on the design of this app at wwdc this year but unfortunately the videos are NDA so I can't link. If you're interested in doing this on your iPad though do try to find a good tutorial on the app.

For swapping out your movies while traveling best bet is to use an online service. If you buy movies or shows on iTunes they download direct onto the iPad.

Seagate have a wiFi pocket HDD that's 500gb.. Can connect to it from the iPad.

As far as I know you cannot hook a hard drive up via cable to an iPad..

What's the best non-portable external hard drive to get? Thinking 2 TB is probably big enough. My ancient 2007 20 inch iMac is nearly full and I would like to move all the itunes libraries to one to free up space. I also have a Time Capsule backing up so it needs to be compatible with Time Machine. The reviews on the Apple store don't seem to be overwhelmingly positive and I would like to get some recommendation from the tech-savvy people here.
Thankyou

Moving iTunes to an external drive is fun... I recently had major issues with an older drive and I made some serious mistakes during the process (copied everything to another HDD, checked it was working, deleted the partition on the old drive, new drive crashed and Time Machine couldn't restore the data [even though it had been backed up] as the original partition didnt exist) - $400 later and all photos/data was recovered but it took them a week.

Re moving movies from an external drive to the iPad - it isnt happening. The camera connection kit can only transfer photos/videos from a camera or an SD card/usb drive.

In theory given that the videos in iPhoto on the iPad (movies taken with a digital camera) are mp4 format, if you had a movie in mp4 format on an SD card then you might be able to move the movie from the card to iPhoto and play them through there.

Personally I would be looking to convert my legally purchased DVDs into the smallest useful file format possible and just loading them directly onto the iPad.

Not bad - not bad at all...

Wish me luck, I've connected the Seagate Satellite to the ancient iMac and am about to transfer my iTunes library to it, could be tears

Would there be power issues using this in Oz? That is a great price.

The User manual just says that it comes with a USB wall adapter. In any case, it's been mentioned here, on flyertalk, and xda-developers...

Mine just arrived today. US power adapter works fine, 5V USB @ 2A. Comes with a 2A Cigarette Lighter adapter too.

Now just to get the hackseagatesatellite.com firmware...

Futaris what's the hack for? Mine is working fine with iOS 6 and my Mac at home. In fact I did some testing and it is working great in the hotel room.

I had to convert some avi to mp4 and will have to convert a lot more for the trip next year.

Only issue so far is there is no TV out option so I can't push videos to the hotel TV through the standard RCA cable that I use - that cable works with Oplayer and the inbuilt videos app.
