I am currently 5000 points short of what is required to book the flight I am looking at.
Is there a certain rule on how close family needs to be to allow this?
I am willing to pay for some points if this is an option?

Not 100% sure on the family rules, but generally they are pretty loose.

Another option would be a Credit card that has bonus sign on points? How urgent do you need the points?

Thanks for that.
I need the points within the next day or so, so the credit card option may not work.
It's a bit of a shame that they don't allow points to be purchased.

Ahh ok time is short for you then... no "cousins" that may be able to help out?

I think finding a 'cousin' who is willing to give me the points will be the best option, even if I do have to give them a few dollars for their time and effort..

Thanks Pat, apparently I need more than 15 posts before I can reply to your PM.
If you didn't mind PM'ing me your email address that's probably easier?
Cheers!

Further to this topic, I need am looking to upgrade a flexi fare to business on a MEL-LAX flight. 45,000 points each way.

There will be two of us flying, I have 90,000, he has over 500,000. I have plat status, he has none.

Apparently to upgrade you need to be gold or plat. If we are travelling on the same booking.
Will they (Velocity) be able to take the points from his account? He is happy to pay the lot.
Or do all the points need to come from my account, when suddenly my new found "cousin" will come into play, to which I will need to transfer the points.

Obviously transfer of points may take a week or so, and upgrades are done 7 days out. So I would hate to call up and find out that the points must come from me, only to find out the upgrade is available, but I will then need to arrange the transfer, by which time, Murphy will come into play, then the upgrades will probably be no longer available.

Any experiences?

You just need to be living at the same address from what I understand. Ie. The address on the velocity account must be exactly the same.

Do you think they would notice if it was changed now? He has just moved in with us ;)

If I've learnt anything on this forum lately it's that the Virgin Australia reps lurk and pull strings in the background, so I'd watch what you post ;)



That's for family pooling. for transfers i doubt cousins and uncles etc live in the same household!
