Someone on 3AW just reported that a "JAL" plane - none are due now - had to take evasive action during descent about 0945 today due to sighting another aircraft turning onto the same approach.

I found this on WebTrak that shows a plane banking left during approach to 34 - anyone heard of this?

Just looked at the same replay, looks to be about 400 feet vertical difference, and it’s China Eastern/Shanghai Airlines (which does look similar to JAL).

Vertical is irrelevant, lateral separation as well as visual was in operation from what I can see, OGS seems to be a lot slower which probably caught the controller by surprise.

I assume vertical separation is minimal at the threshold! Apparently the distance is longer than it seems on the map.

Vertical distance is only applicable in non visual conditions, while I am not in Melbourne and there was some weather around, there is a reasonable expectation that visual separation was being applied, as the Jetstar overflight was given visual traffic and reported sighting. Live ATC does not have coverage so its hard to tell who initiated the avoidance action, had it been in IMC its more than likely legal - just.
