My recent changi experience with family

I don't weigh up the cost of a transit room in dollars but the benefit I will get.

$120 (or $20 an hour) for 6 hours of quiet time, the ability to lie down and have a shower and get changed is worth especially if you've been in Y and/ or don't have lounge access with showers. It also sets me up for the rest of the trip, ensuring I am not arriving wrecked.

Realistically if if I was killing 6 hours in the terminal I'd spend that and more on shopping.

Couldn't agree with you more - a hotel during a transit is well worth it.

Just you can find more value out of the Airport in Hotels, than at the Airport with the Transit Hotels in my opinion, experience, and personal weighing up of value in my personal circumstances.

The in Airport Transit hotels have their place - and charge a premium for it, be it people who don't have visa to enter Singapore - through to ones not willing to Uber to a hotel and pay the premium to use the Airport ones.

My cost earlier this month was USD38.
The person in this thread paid $180 for 6 hours. When I was searching SIN transit hotel for 11 February for wife, daughter and myself the price quoted was ~$120 but there were no rooms.

A couple of weeks ago I paid ~$80 for 6 hours in a transit room in KUL airport. That is a fair rate. Anything more and it is daylight robbery.

I will never understand a person that will spend $KK+ to travel but wont spend $100-$200 for a comfortable sleep, hot shower and some privacy.

Same I dont understand people that dont send their laundry out to be done by the hotel and would rather spend their time in a pay by the dime laundry room, doing their own washing.

I dont have money to burn but I figured both are part of the travelling budget.

To each their own.

Some love premium flights, expensive hotels, expensive restaurants.

Some don't. My goal is to have as many trips to Thailand as possible.

To me spending money to sleep is money wasted. A $50/night hotel is just as good as a $200/night hotel. I'd really love to stay at the Hilton in Pattaya. Great hotel but asking rate for June THB6,500+/night. I can get Superior room the Sunshine Hotel or Eastiny Hotels on Soi 8 for ~THB1250/night including buffet breakfast for 2. You'd be surprised how much I paid for 9 nights at Eastiny Place next week. Less than AUD$100 in total.

Economy class via HKG for that trips is ~AUD845 on Qantas 747 and EK A380.

And I can get a steak each night for ~THB250 and the wife can eat herself silly on Thai food for half that amount.

My biggest cost is golf at ~AUD100-150 per game and plan on playing 7 games next week.

And when I come home I've still had a great holiday and start planning the next one in June and then again in July. Yes I am a chrapskate. So yes I will save $100-$200 on Sunday in SIN waiting for my early morning 3K flight.

That to me is huge waste as I don't play golf and couldn't care less for the game...

But sleep and a shower?

We all have our own priorities!

PS. You cannot compare Pattaya living costs to SG...I hate Thailand...only because I am so depressed when I arrive back to SYD where everyone is miserable, costs are sky high and the Pineapple just don't taste the same :)

Pattaya and Singapore have similar types of hotels but do not get mentioned very often on AFF. There is nothing wrong with the Hotel 81's or the Fragrance hotels in SIN but not worth the taxi trip there and back for short transits.

I've now had overnight transits in AKL, WLG, BKK, TPE, HKG, KUL, ATH and SIN with some airports multiple times. Sure a hotel would have been nice at the time but I still manage to sleep in each airport either on the chairs provided or on the floor. Shower in the lounge in morning.

P.S. Live and breathe golf so not too worried about cost. And golf is going to take me to destinations I have not been before.

Same, USD$38 for me as well, booked about two months in advance. Arrived Changi 5 pm, lounged a bit, checking in at Aerotel 10:30 am, out at 4:30 am and caught a flight at 7 am.

The swimming pool at Changi is great for adults and kids. Open air so may not be as much fun if rainy . You have to pay but you get towel and tetra pak fruit juice. Take your own toiletries. Cost US $15 a few years ago.

I tried it once - overnight in an airport. Just could not do it and vowed never again. For some reason the only way i can sleep is horizontal

I'm with you John, but then some people reckon us golfers are crazy...
$150 for 6 hrs at Cape Wickam, King Island, or $150 for a sleep: I'll take the lifetime memories thanks!
Also agree on the benefit of golf taking you places, as I've now played in over 50 countries and therefore been a tourist in same.

But back to the topic at hand: I've got a 5 hr transit in the wee hours coming up at AKL in a couple of weeks and am not looking forward to it. SIN would be a much nicer location for the transit.

If I'm tired enough I can sleep in a chair quite easily. Ended up going for a walk outside and found a quiet corner and had a couple of hours sleep.
