...and they weren't good ones.

I recently had to go to the Gold Coast for the university games. Seeing that Qantas doesn't fly there (*sigh*), I decided to go MEL->SYD->OOL with Virgin Australia, and OOL->MEL on the way back with Jetstar.

On the way up, the MEL->SYD leg went quite well. I had the flexi fare, which meant I got food for free (a wrap, which was quite nice, and a bar of chocolate), and free on-board Foxtel. When i landed in SYD that's when the bad luck kicked in. My leg to OOL got cancelled because of a lightning strike :(. So I was stuck in SYD for three hours before the next OOL flight with nothing to do (and before anyone asks, I'm a Bronze QFF and a Red Velocity, so going to the lounges were out of the question). At least Virgin paid for my lunch when I was at the airport.

On the way back to Melbourne, my flight was delayed three hours. Instead of arriving in MEL at around 9pm, I got there around midnight. They did send me a text message about the delay though, which meant I got to spend more time in the pub watching the grand final (even though Collingwood lost).

It's probably not the worst bad luck flying story out there, but it's a good story for my first post :p

Welcome to AFF!

Pity your first flight had some issues, but they were out of VA's control.

But being a Collingwood supporter - you deserved everything you got ;P

I forgot to mention the reason why the JQ flight was delayed. The flight attendants gave the reason as (and this is a verbatim quote) "an aircraft shortage"

Would possibly be due to aircrew shortage. They are having those issues at the moment.
Otherwise could've been a broken down aircraft and waited for another one to come in (one that would normally spend the night at OOL)

Welcome to AFF baggers89!

Ahhh, so you were some of that University Games Riff-Raff that was hanging around the Gold Coast a few weeks ago! I won't hold that against you. ;) I had a fair bit to do with running the Swimming Events while they were running, so I may have seen you somewhere around the coast. What sports did you do?

I can pretty much only say what others have said. Getting your flight cancelled was unlucky, but it could have been worse, I've had to overnight a few times because there was no seats left on later flights. I've just learnt to cop it, it's all part of travel.

I feel for you being stuck at Gold Coast airport for several hours, it's small and there really isn't much to do. Same being stuck in Sydney Airport with no lounge access, it's not a very nice terminal, especially without lounge access!

Jetstar seem to frequently have crewing problems on flights out of OOL, especially in the morning. I'd say this is most likely what the problem was.

Should have flown to BNE and gotten the train ;)
