Must you check you bags through on an overnight transit in SIN

If flying SYD-SIN-FRA (say) with an overnight transit in SIN, I know you usually check your bags through to FRA, but what if you prefer to collect your bags in SIN and re-check the next morning. Is this allowed?

Yes it is allowed. Just ask for them to be short checked to SIN when you check in.

When I did this they also only issued boarding pass SYD-SIN with a check-in required in SIN the following flight

I've done the short check many times. Just be sure to ask as by default, the bag tag that gets generated will be through to your final destination.

We are happy to check our main baggage to our final destination and just take our carry on to the Crowne Plaza. That works well for us.

We have an 18h layover coming up next Tues/Wed - arriving Sin from LHR at 0530 and heading to Syd at 0100 next morning. So for that extended time (because we changed our UK return dates and cudnt get a better connx) we will leave our thru-checked bags and head to the Crowne Plaza with just a carry-on of shorts, swimmers etc. It took a bit to get an agreement with CP on a day-use room (had to email an enqy and negotiate from there) but day use fills much of the time, plus a wander around Jewel, maybe a terminal circumnavigation, and of course dinner in TPR, should see us out to boarding time to Syd.
