Hi folks,

I'm off to Pune in a couple of weeks, and will be on QF52 into Mumbai at 0240 then leaving again on a domestic flight at 0955 (thinking about making that a bit later if I can).

Is there anywhere decent at or near Mumbai airport to rest up and recover for a few hours? I'm seriously thinking about booking a room at the Intercontinental, but booking a hotel stay that will be a maximum of 6 hours or something just seems silly. But I'm pretty sure I will really want a shower and somewhere to lie down!

I'm a measly QC silver, and departing on a Jet Airways flight, so I believe I won't have any sort of lounge access.

Any ideas appreciated.

Thanks!

Danny

I've stayed at the Hyatt Regency Mumbai which is very nice and probably as quick to walk to as get a taxi from the International Terminal.

Paid about 8000 rupees a night so not cheap, and I doubt they do an hourly or half-day rate but you could call them and ask.

Yeah, that's about the same as the Intercontinental, which seems a bit over the top for just a few hours. I guess I could always just wander around Mumbai airport seeing if I can find a shower!

I don't understand the timing of QF51. Why get to Singapore that late and then Mumbai that early when you're leaving in the middle of the day anyway??? Oh well.

QF51 is timed to connect with the flights from Oz inbound to SIN (particularly from SYD & MEL).

I did QF51 into BOM last year, and connected to my final destination (Udaipur) on first flight out at around 6am ish (or just after), which basically meant I had about 90mins hanging around the domestic terminal. Then got an early check in at my hotel when I arrived, seemed to be more sensible than going for a 9am flight and having 4 or 5 hrs at a hotel.

Do they have a lounge for use by Priority Pass members?

Maybe investing in a PP membership would be an option (can be used more than once so could use on the return journey and possibly close to the same cost as a single stay in a hotel room). No hassles about leaving the airport either I guess.

Just thinking aloud.....

No chance... there are no showers in BOM airport.

The transfer & waiting facilities are also so so. Make sure you meet the jet airways rep near the baggage carousals and they should take care of transfer to domestic terminal (free).

Once you get to domestic terminal there is not much to do but wait... or try and get on a earlier flight.

OK, I think I'm just going to get my poor harassed travel agent to change my Mumbai-Pune flight to later in the day and spend a few hours in the Intercontinental (I'm a Priority Club person, so it's a nobrainer for a choice of hotels!).

Thanks for the info folks.

Man, all this just for a shower at a newly-developed airport! Wish people just copy Changi when they're redoing airports...

Cheers,

Danny

Another thing you might try is go to the intercontinental for a spa (starts around Rs 1000) so you could have a massage & shower.

p.s. I got this info from a flyertalk thread (2008) so YMMV

That's a smart way to save money. I have used my Mastercard Gold to access domestic lounge adjoining Jet Airways lounge. So Mastercard Gold or Platinum may be useful.

Here is my preferred option.

If you are arriving on the 2.30am flight, then you should not bother with the domestic connection to Pune. You should simply drive to Pune. The road is good and at that time of night it will only be a couple of hours drive. You could even sleep, which is a really good idea, because you really don't want to watch the driving skills. You'd probably get there before 6am.
Then just check-in to your hotel and sleep.
A Meru a/c cab or similar should cost about Rs2500. Anyway seems a no brainer. Waiting 7 hours for a 20 minute flight..........

Yeah, I thought about it. Reading a couple of stories around the net about late night Indian cab drivers scared me off it!

As it is I've been able to switch to a later flight, so I'll get to crash in a nice Intercontinental hotel room for a good 14 hours, assuming I can convince them to give me a late checkout.

Doesnt matter know, just was thinking left-of-field the OP may have got more for the $$$ by purcahsing lounge access insteadof hotel room.

If it's closed then not worth the risk. Besides, a proper hotel will be nicer.

Actually the real reason I didn't look too hard at lounges is that I can put a hotel for the night on my expense report, but I think they would frown on a priority pass membership!

Cheers,

Danny

Yes, I presumed that was the reason. Hotel will be more comfortable anyway.

Enjoy the trip.

Just as a quick note for anyone searching on this topic in the future, I can confirm the IC Lalit Mumbai is a very pleasant way of finding some creature comforts for 12 hours or so. Not the cheapest option, but it was pretty cheap by IC standards for me.
