G'day there everyone,

this is my first post so please be gentle.

I have to travel thru BNE next week, first to New Zealand for a week, then back thru BNE and on to LAX. I want to take quite a bit of luggage from Australia to the USA, but dont want to take it to New Zealand. Is there anywhere I can leave it at BNE? When returning from New Zealand I only have a two hour stopover, so don't really want to clear customs. Is there such a thing as baggage lockers airside?

Any advice most sincerely welcomed.

Juddles.

The only lockers at BIT are landside not airside so you'd need to clear customs, get the stuff out of storage then go upstairs & checkin all before the flight to LAX closes.

Personally it's not something I would be comfortable doing as it only takes your inbound flight to be late to throw all your plans into chaos particularly this week with the snowstorms happening on the South Island.

How many pieces precisely will you be taking to the USA?

The allowance is two pieces BNE/LAX/BNE however if you're flying AKL/BNE/LAX on the one day you should be given the 2 pieces, the only trouble being the issue of excess luggage on the outbound sector BNE/AKL (?) 7 days prior.

What airlines are you flying on to/from NZ & the US? You need to establish whether they would through check you from NZ via BNE to the USA firstly.

It may be more convenient to take the stuff to NZ with you then put it in storage at the Airport (assuming of course there are lockers there), then just pick collect it prior to checking in on the way back from NZ.

Thanks Oz!!

I figured BIT would not have airside storage, but was wishful :)

Have decided to lug all my gear over to NZ and back. Jetstar is going to LOVE me!

On the departure level there is a counter for unaccompanied baggage so it may be worth asking them what it costs to send the stuff directly BNE/LAX. I would compare that cost to what it would cost you in excess baggage BNE/AKL/BNE on JQ.

Can you change the AKL/BNE flight to QF so you can through check your luggage AKL/BNE/LAX as I'm not sure JQ in AKL will want to check your bags through AKL JQ BNE QF LAX so you'd need to look at worse case scenario ie paying excess BNE/AKL/BNE will be by the kilo. The difference in fare AKL/BNE may well be cheaper than what you'd end up paying in excess.

No doubt the tickets are already bought/paid, but for others, this is where it may have been advisable to purchase a more expensive ticket, but one that comes with more luggage allowance. Note it is also usually cheaper to purchase the allowance in advance (when possible), than fronting up on the day.

If not already done, i'd be assessing my need to take all the luggage. Even hotel laundry's are cheaper than airline excess luggage (well, usually!).

The other option which may be cheaper would be to look for a forwarding company (post office, DHL, sea mail etc) ex-BNE or NZ and mail it back to your home address (whichever stuff you dont need).
