Hi All,

Looking at flights to NY in October and economy flights via qantas.com are pretty good at the moment, $1600 per person ex-Adelaide.

Problem is i really want to have the long haul leg (Melbourne > LA) to be premium economy on the way over.

Can you do this during the booking online?

I can't seem to find the option.

Thanks in advance.

P.S If this the wrong area i do apologise

I think there can be issues trying to book award availability online when there is not the same class available for the whole journey which I discovered when looking for PE any seat awards BNE/DFW, as the availability options would only come up with the cheapest points levels if that same class exists on all the flights for the entire journey eg QF8 BNE/SYD connecting with QF7 SYD/DFW.

Another AFFer had issues when wanting a FASA on a SYD/LAX sector which showed availability yet ex CBR it came up with
some ridiculous amount of points as the system can't find F seats on CBR/SYD flights because there is no F cabin on domestic flights.

I realise you're looking at paid fares not award tickets but I would call up res on this & ask them for a through PE fare ex ADL to LAX whereby travel ADL/MEL vv would be in whY.

You don't want to use the multi-city tool as that will charge sector fares ADL/MEL & MEL/LAX which would be more expensive than a through fare ADL/LAX. If this is a booking that cannot be done online ask them if they'll waive the phone booking fee as it's not possible to book yourself via the website.

Even if you were just looking at MEL/LAX/MEL, I don't think you can ask the website for a return fare outbound in PE & return in whY as you can only specify one class when doing a return availability. If you used the multi city tool for PE over & whY back it would quote you one way fares in each direction which would be extremely expensive.

Again if you call up reservations I would ask them if the PE & whY fares are combineable ie can you pay half the return PE return fare ADL/LAX for your outbound journey and half the return whY fare ADL/LAX for your inbound journey. This is another example of not being able to do it online but I'm sure good travel agents out there would be able to do this as well as QF res.

As previous post mentioned you can do this either with QF reservations or with a travel agent. I don't know why you can't do it online as other airlines allow you to do it and still have good prices. For instance we just booked 3 return tickets to Hong Kong with Virgin Atlantic. PE going over and Upper Class coming back. All online and all prices good value.

You can also try booking on the ifly.net.au site. It allows you to select class for each sector although isn't always that successful.
