Just poked my nose into MU web site and see they are increasing capacity Oz to PVG starting next month:

Whilst I am far from an MU supporter I can still never get over the $2.1K ret J flts they sold when first starting the MEL-PVG service. We are seriously seeing plenty capacity Oz to China - hopefully we will see some seriously competitive fares again soon.

Not sure if this has been posted previously - if it has mods can just delete.

the mind boggles - MU is offering double dailies from MEL and SYD, Air China has dailies from MEL and SYD, and there are other new Chinese entrants into the market as well... yet QF can only muster up traffic for a single SYD-PVG flight it seems. With timings (ex Australia) that make it difficult for connecting pax.

Worth noting the SYD-PEK MU flight will not be eligible for 72 hour transit without visa in PEK if anyone is intending to take that flight.

And throw in the extra capacity that SQ and CX are offering going forward with great connections to China and the mind goes into double boggling overdrive.

Now I have no knowledge of rate of growth of traffic ex Oz - but surely China has to rate at the top of the list or close to it but I see zero attempt by QF to take part - am I missing something?

Likes like theyve given up since axing the PEK flights years ago - maybe they got burnt trying to market to inbound passengers for China or there's just no willingness in the market to pay for fares above unprofitable levels (which wouldnt surprise me given some of the prices I've seen ex-SZX for instance when Hainan was running direct flights to SYD)

Surprised they don't get JQ to give it go given they probably have the spare aircraft to run a route or 2

Don't forget there wasn't a level playing field until just recently. Qantas was subjected to unique rules which didn't allow them (and only them it would seem) to handle on-line bookings from China... or Thailand...

Very unfair of the governments of those countries to single out QF to prevent them from accepting pax.

Coupled with that... ever try ringing Qantas from a country like China? There is no priority line based on status, so trying to speak to someone could have you in a queue for 20, 30 or 40 minutes. Office couldn't handle your enquiry? They'd put you through to Australia, but again on a line that was unable to handle the input of your FF number - so another wait of 20, 30 or 40 minutes.
