These changes are probably fine for those of your in Australia since by definition if you are keen cathay flyers you are flying long (or medium) haul already. As someone who lives in Hong Kong and who flies weekly to short haul destinations like Manila in Economy its a disaster. I won't renew my Diamond based on the changes. And I fly EVERY WEEK.

This means you were booking mid-level economy/prem economy fares if you won't retain diamond after the updates.
On the plus side - you can now book cheaper fares and probably retain Gold - saving you a heap of cash.

Actually if you fly HKG-MNL round trip every week (say 50 weeks a year) unless you are willing to pay for K class or higher you won't even make Gold either. That's 5 points each way or 5 * 2 * 50 = 500. whereas 711* 2 * 50 (in V class or higher) = 71100 miles.

Actually the one's who come out even worse are the one's that relied on internal USA flights (lax-dfw-phl rt old scheme - (1200 * 2) * 2 = 4800 miles each round trip). New system is 2*10*2 or 40 points in any economy class (excluding O). Even first will only be 100 points.

My plan was long haul PEY... So looks like CX Silver for me, with an odd QF SG if I need partner lounge access. Unless AA is super generous with partner PEY earn after 2016.

Happy wandering

Surely with Silver tier members still getting access to CX Business Lounges (plus the other benefits) still means that Silver is achievable and probably worth it - except for the lack of guest access for people accompanying a silver member which seems a bit sucky. Still heaps better than the benefits of QF Silver.
