From news.com.au:

GREEK authorities have launched a campaign to prevent female tourists from wearing stiletto heels at key archaeological sites in a bid to protect monuments.

The authorities are concerned about the impact of women’s heels on the sites, which will be home to theatrical and operatic performances as the summer seasons kicks off.

If its really damaging then fair call i guess. But some ladies will complain !

And some may well feel relieved they don't have to wear them ;)

Some but some would reply in the same way when i asked how come there bags are so heavy.... 'I am a lady' and the thought of going out not drressed up would have then worked up that the thought. Really funny some of these ladies. Then again i am sure lots of guys could complain there wife/girlfirend is too casual and does not get dressed up enough.

I think it's a good decision and am surprised it hasn't been done before. Who goes to an ancient site in stiletto's anyway. I'd of though comfortable footwear would be the norm. I do realise this is mainly for events.

Very sensible idea - Every time I have climbed up to see the Acropolis, it never ceases to amaze me how many stupid women are wearing high heels. It's difficult to navigate in flat shoes let alone in heels, as part of the walkway is slippery and uneven.

From a safety point of view, I would never wear heels, there must be numerous of cases each year of women twisting their ankles.

Most of my travel, sightseeing, is done in leather dress shoes with heels but I agree and think it is a good idea to try and protect ancient sites where possible.

John I am trying to picture you in 4"+ heels but it is just not working!:p:lol:

Would the picture be clearer if you imagined 1/2"-1" inch heals on mens leather dress shoes as opposed to mens flat soled shoes.

helps if you probably call them more like dress boots ? this is what i am thinking anyway.

I would like to see someone in stiletto heels go from Akropoli metro station to the top of the Acropolis - especially on a 40 degree C day.

I was wearing sneakers last time we were there and nearly came a cropper a few times... I'd hate to think what its like in heels but then again like sah004 said, it would be mostly events i would imagine.
