Most disappointing destinations

I thought Baghdad was completely over-rated - didn't get shot at once, and only heard distant gunfire at night. Kabul on the other hand - that is a happening place!

Charleville.

That's a bit harsh! What were you expecting?

I should get out more as I can't remember any thundering disappointments.
If I had to name any;
I wouldn't bother with Bilbao again, but only went there for the Guggenheim (that was the real disappointment, but I had been warned.)
Florence was lovely, visually, but almost every Italian I had to deal with was hostile and/or trying to rip me off.

Agree about Bilbao, not a place I would visit again. I did like San Sebastian which is about an hour's drive.

The emphasis is on disappointing, not just bad. Otherwise we can put Harare and Mogadishu on the list.

I disagree with the list to the extent that they are simply overpriced. I don't think one is disappointed by paying too much - only if the value isn't there.

I think if I have to name my 10, they would be (in no particular order):
Paris, Frankfurt, Casablanca, Kuala Lumpur, Bangalore, Chicago, Toronto, Melbourne, Sao Paulo, and Taipei.

Disappointed in:

Anchorage - boring, however I don't think it really touts itself as a destination in itself

Casablanca - visited a number of times on business and not even with the locals' knowledge can you make a silk purse out of this sow's ear (religiously incorrect pun not intended)

Macau - stinking hot & humid and a few old ruins among casinos that could be anywhere

New Territories - I though I would expand my HKG horizons; that's a day I'll never get back.

Ireland - simply failed to charm. maybe the endless traffic jams had something to do with it

Bilbao - another vote for being under-whelmed with the Guggenheim (interior, the building is pretty nifty)

Bratislava, Slovakia. Been there a couple of times for a drive stopover between Budapest and Vienna. Small city with 80's communism style apartment blocks everywhere. Felt unsafe there a couple of times.

You can tell its been a lazy Sunday when you have time to do this,;

The original list from the website was;

Gibraltar
Niagara Falls
Temple Bar, Dublin
Hollywood
Nassau
Liberty Is, New York
Frankfurt
Walt Disney World Florida
Casablanca
Las Vegas
She was a bit more specific in some cases taking about asite rather than a city,
The AFF members list, at the moment looks like;
Kuala Lumpur - 4
Bilbao - 4
Frankfurt - 3
Paris (+ Disneyland) - 3
Casablanca - 3
Brussels - 2
Brisbane - 2
Florence - 2
One nomination - Singapore, Dubai, Raleigh-Durham, Fredriksted, Hyderabad, Naples, Venice, Bali, Rome, Pisa, Charleville, Mazatlan, Bangalore,Chicago, Toronto, Melbourne, Sao Paulo, Taipei, Anchorage, Macau, NewTerritories, Bratislava
Lookslike we agree on two, but Italy takes a bit of a hit overall with 6.

Fiji would be mind unless you want to start a family on your honeymoon cause there is nothing else to do other than that and swim.

Hey you left my nomination of Baghdad off the list!:(

Hmmm... planning to be there in Jun/Jul next year :oops:

My deepest apologies i will correct it, i told you it was a lazy weekend, drinking Coopers Celebration Ale!! Apologies again

Byron Bay was a total disappointment for me. Town full of the great unwashed.

Ok I'll bite on this. Byron - up there with the more beautiful beachy places around. I've been going there a long time, all seasons. Sure I surf, which colours things somewhat, but unwashed people? Unwashed? There are so many of them swimming, often nude, in the surf? Are they not getting a simultaneous wash? Oh sure, you've got a few folk playing bongos with Rasta hair. But really - I see more of those on a morning's cafe jaunt in Syd's inner-west.

Sure the Beach Hotel is as bogan as any you'll find. So don't go there. Same goes for the Mexican joint across the road. You want luxe? Go grab a place at Watego's. Just to Peace out? 'Bimby. Better still, take a bongo class and go sit in the park opposite the boganotel and slap yourself happy.

Oz beach places I dislike? Noosa would be one. Sure, I've scored some classic surf there but trotting around Hastings St with all the pasty Melburnians is a real chore.

Planning to be there July THIS year as a driving stopover between Vienna and western Hungary. I've been warned!

I have 5.

1. Guam
2. Brunei
3. Houston
4. Cairo
5. Johannesburg

Each to their own, of course, but I do wonder how anyone could be 'disappointed' by Johannesburg. What on earth would one be looking forward to, to have it not fulfilled? :)

I would add Sydney. Apart from a overrated bridge and a half finished Opera house with bad Acoustics, not much else.
