My last trip arriving into SYD at 0700 meant travelling with traffic towards the city. Cost to get home $109 whereas it could be as cheap at $52 during off-peak hours.

Narita is the most expensive airport with taxis costing $250 upwards to the centre of Tokyo.

And given Narita is nearly 60km from the city centre of course it is going to be expensive to take a taxi. However, there are numerous train and bus options to get passengers to the city centre much cheaper.

At Singapore the suburban train takes you to the city centre for a couple of dollars.

At Melbourne the public transport buses are deliberately routed to obscure train stations to ensure that SkyBus and the taxi industry basically have a closed shop to protect a grossly inefficient and expensive system.

As a young 'un I naively hailed a cab the first time I landed at Heathrow, bound for the city. $$$ OMG. Fortunately it was for work, but even then I was so embarrassed that I only claimed half the cost.

In all the times I've flown in and out of CHC, I never took a taxi. Either the bus ~$2.10 or the shuttle for $17 which I usually had to myself.

NZD300 for taxi from Queenstown to Dunedin - 3hrs. Queenstown snowed in, had to get back to Sydney to then drive to Bega to attend a wedding as the only best man. Travel Insurance covered it all.

SGD $17 from Town Hall to the airport. Very cheap. Unfortunately for the cab driver, he didn't specify cash only at the hotel and when we got to the airport he couldn't take my card.

That ended up being the cheapest cab ride I've ever had. Free.

It can cost (average per km) this if travelling after 5pm on Fri, Sat or Sun night (including $5 airport surcharge and 25% peak hour surcharge), or will cost more at any time if you get a stupid Chrysler.

On my last trip, we didn't want to wait in long taxi queue so took a limo for sgd55. Was very quick and with 3 pax and baggage we thought this good value.

Auckland airport to city on Tuesday night at $92. Last trip was 5yrs ago so came as a bit of a shock. Did the return using the airport express bus which was as convenient and timely for ony $16!

Non-airport related but about Euro150 from Monaco to Nice at about 2am after an already expensive night at JimmyZ after the bus failed to stop at what we thought was the stop

Every US city I've been to, there is at least another option for airport > CBD travel besides taxis, be it a bus, train or shuttle. Except DTW.

During the volcanic ash airspace closer in Europe a few years ago, there were reports of people getting long distance taxis (eg, Madrid-Paris, Denmark-London) when all the buses and trains were booked out.

When Australian airspace had problems with ash from South America, there were people getting MEL-SYD taxis.

There are expensive "honest" taxi fares, and of course many expensive "dishonest" taxi fares as well. One of my partner's colleagues was last year charged $80 SYD international - CBD on her first visit to Sydney. Seems excessive even with tolls and via Southern X Drive.

I have paid ~€50-€55 a few times for taxis in Europe.

In Thailand we paid ~THB3,300 (~AUD130) for taxi BKK-Canary Bay Rayong but company paid for those. I have paid ~AUD60-AUD70 for taxi BKK-Pattaya a few times.

In Australia I remember a trip from MEL airport to City cost ~AUD65 but there was a few of us in taxi for Ozfest.

I was leading a group into HEL late at night. The tax fare came in at $200 on the cc bill. Luckily, I was not paying.

MEL airport to Upper Ferntree Gully during peak hour. And 22 years later I think that is still the highest in $$ terms. Was about $140 from memory. Flew in from a short work trip (probably from SYD) and met my wife at the hospital for antenatal clases.
