Being on a pre-paid does not mean that they will necesarily be unable to access. I use prepaid yet can roam to some countries

Majority won't let you.
And I imagine especially young text maniac service providers/plans which will be fine with me!

Perhaps we can hope that the airlines will banish the mobile phone users to the back of the aircaft like they used to do with smokers.
The smart smokers asked for non-smoking seats and went down the back to smoke.

Check-in will now include a question about your prefered seating - "cellular or non-cellular" :D. Perhaps then they can add the "reclining or non-reclining" and banish them all to the back of the aircraft.
Hmmm.... Can you choose cellular with non-reclining or non-cellular with reclining?

Ah Well, Yodafone and Optus offer it but Telstra doesn't from what I can tell

But I can assure you that my own phone will remain switched off during the flight. Its it one time I like to be uncontactable.

I also enjoy being uncontactable while in the air. However if mobile phone service becomes available then, on work trips, I will be expected to have my ph switched on. On personal trips, some people will also expect me to have ph switched on - it will depend on the person whether I do or not ;)

Rockwell Collins AVOiD = CAN (Cheap and Nasty )

Isn't NZ's avod also by Rockwell Collins? Seems to work pretty good (apart from being a bit slow to respond) - much better than QF's avod.

I agree. Many times I have left work after everyone wants a piece of you and wants you to do something yesterday and its just a relief to get on the a/c, the door shuts, and the only interruption will be the usually pleasant FAs offering you a choice of wines or some other pleasant beverage. It is great to be uncontactable

I do not have a problem with the mobile users who are discreet with their calls but I do have a problem with the PWs* who probably don't need a phone - the volume of their voice makes the instrument redundant. A phone users section up the back would be ideal.

This is a very interesting development (even if you dont like the idea being contactable and the other annoyances of other Talking Loud).
DJ have gone down a path of entertainment for the masses (at a fee) and pictures posted certainly look like it has "freshened up" the look of the cabin as well by breaking up all the blue leather.
QF on the other hand are basically betting on Business types wanting the choice to stay connected for email/phone and text so the 3-4 hr trip that is a CBD syd to CBD MEL isnt unproductive time. There is always the standard
onboard video and I'm sure they will do a quick "freshen up" of that product as well. Longhaul to PER already have better onboard offerings with 747-300s
operating with at free seatback and multichannel options
Who has got it right..time will tell.
either way just proves how lucky we are vs other countries with the Domestic product available

Oh how I so hated those people! As a kid I was put in the back a couple of times because of full flights, not because anyone in the family smoked, and saw those smokers come down from the front to have their hit. My father had a go at them once about why they do not sit in the smoking section if they smoked. Their reply was that they did not want to sit in all that smoke for the entire flight!
On the otherhand I vaguely seem to recall flying on an airline in Europe that had the smoking section on the right hand side of the aircraft and the non-smoking section on the left! I cannot remember which but that invisible smoking barrier was quite humorous.
Oh you could not have a mobile talkers' section in the US as there are laws against passengers congregating in the aircraft.

Interesting comment. I recently had a couple of short hops in the US (LAX-Dallas in First; Dallas to Pittsburgh on a commuter jet; Pittsburgh to Laguardia in Economy) and i have to say that the second two flights were no different in experience to my flights in Oz

One thing I thought was terrible in the US was the airports - now that was not a fun experience. I guess being English I am much more used to nice neat queues than the free for all in LAX or PIT...

Disclaimer: I don't own a mobile for work or personal use

Unlesss you are very young or very old, there are not many of you left.

It won't be long until you own a mobile and are making unecessary calls.
