yes, but when was the last time you sat on a bus for 16hrs without being able to get off for a bit to escape? Not sure what it is like over east, but here in WA if you catch a country bus, 1 hr out of Perth, mobile phones stop working

Maybe we will need to have Phone and Non-Phone sections of the aircraft just like they used to have smoking and non-smoking sections. Perhaps each deck of the A380 could be designated one or the other?

If I were still a corporate slave, I would be happy to avoid flights where I could have my cell-phone turned on: as it stands, being on a plane is about the only place where one can legitimately justify having the bloody thing swtiched off! Modern air travel is frought with distractions - why add one more? If you're so important that you can't afford to be out-of-touch with the office, I doubt you'll be on a commercial flight.

I see aeroplanes as no different to other public transports such as trains and busses and they are not banned there. air travel has just been a special case due to safety concerns

Most people do not want to sit on a train or bus and listen to someone yelling into their phone for a half hour trip let alone a 16 hour flight. With a train or bus you can get of at the next stop and catch the following service to get away from the annoyance.

Also the QP has mobile free zones to enable waiting pax to be free of the irritation

Touche.. even on a bus they seem to speak twice as loud as normal so what is it going to be like on an ac, and from what you can hear in the ten rows either side of them the talk is usually cough in any event..not business related.

Try regional bus services. Sheer fun! Recently decided to do the 4 hr Cork-Dublin regional bus service. Entire trip was spent hearing other's meaningless phone calls, stupid ringtones and sms's etc. No chance I was hopping off to wait another hour or so for the next one though!

Often ignored, especially when the club is busy About as effective as the smoke free areas near the bar in pubs vs the smoke allowed atmosphere everywhere else in the pub.

Also, was on a recent domestic flight. There was a guy near me who proudly pulled out his Nokia 3xx_ phone midflight, then checked his messages and put the phone away.

The phone remained on for the rest of the flight...

Nothing was said by FA's/Pilot/CSM's. The plane landed properly and without any issues.

Ahh, there we have scientific proof that Nokia 3xx_ phones do not cause any safety problems during flight :shock: - but only when used by mindless idiots .

Likewise, I flew DFW to LAX in early Feb, and thew guy next to me was continually checking and replying to his emails, with the FA standing next to us. This continued during takeoff, and ascent, until he must have lost range, then same as we descended. Not a single comment from the FA's even though they observed the usage. Maybe something to do with him sitting in first.

Yes we worked this one out a long time ago.

If you wish to use mobile, recline or smoke then the back of the aircraft is the place for you, or even better sit on the wing.

Mobiles in flight? What fresh hell is this? Train trips are bad enough but flights??
We haven't developed an etiquette for phones here. Doubt we ever will with the all-encompassing selfishness that exists out there now. When I was travelling in Japan a few years ago I noted that on suburban trains people would only text - I think talking on phones is banned. On the Shinkansen (Bullet) train from Fukuoka to Osaka pax would get up from their seats and go the the vestibules at the ends of the carriages to talk on their phones. Of course most Japanese are very self conscious and it just would not do for strangers to hear their conversations. Can't see that happening here in the Land of Me First!

Like others here I am well and truly over the 24 hour contactability of mobile phones and flights are an escape. Just remember what life was like before them. The world still turned.
