Mobile Phone Trials.......

While I'd like the ability to send/receive SMS and email messages via my PPC during a flight, I'm not fond of the idea of having to listen to loud conversations while I'm reclining! :D

Or even the continuous "message received" beeps from phones all over the aircraft throughout a 14 hour flight!

Email access should be all that is needed.

I don't think the airlines would effectively be able to enforce a silent SMS policy.

True! Imagine trying to sleep while phone alerts are going off around the cabin. :( It would probably lead to new annoucements by the flight crews. "We will be dimming the lights after the meal service, and ask that those of you with mobile phones please switch them off or to silent mode for the comfort of other passengers...".

As jasonja3 said it would be difficult to enforce. The more I think about it, the more I'd be happy for there to be no mobile phone service available on flights!

No it wouldn't.
In the style of a Catholic Head Mistress "IF I hear one phone, I will be turning the In-Flight-Cell off!"

Long haul flights are about the only time I am free from mobile phones calls and sms messages. Surely pax can wait until the ac lands before checking their message. I think it would really p*ss you off hearing the beeps etc when you are trying to relax or work on a flight. I think you would appreciate that some Americans talk loudly during normal conversations, but tend to raise their voice when talking on a cell phone, so this is something I don't want to hear on a flight, listing to someone in row 70 when you are in J class.

Unfortunately, even the noise cancelling headphones won't be of much use, especially in LOTFAP

I have to agree completely with Maca44, I enjoy being free of my mobile, and certainly do not want to listen to other people talking on theirs. Some of the stuff people talk about doesn't and shouldn't need to be heard by third parties.

Don't worry John,

Nice things happen to nice people. :D 8)
Bill, at which point did I mention that I was a nice person.

this would suck. it is something people will use simply because its there and once its in it never goes again.

i love switching my phone off for flights, its brilliant.

then if your ego is such that it requires recognition by talking on your phone during flight so that you can impress yourself and apparently others it must be a painful headspace.

So your worst nightmare would be being seated behind a reclining mobile phone junkie :?:
It wasn't, but the possibility is there for it to become one of my worst nightmares. :?

In-flight mobile phones

What a scenario - I read today that Air France are trialling the use of mobiles on their intra-Europe flights, only for SMS at first, but it's planned to allow voice-calls if the trial is successful. I can't think of anything worse than voice-calls in-flight - it's bad enough having a sat-phone in-seat, but the cost puts most folk off. The horror would be magnified by the "I have the right to talk as much as I want" attitude that is common not only to American users (as noted above), but to Australians as well. All frequent flyers who object to this terrible development should voice loud objections - we need to stop this before it even gets started.

Got to admit, it doesn't bother me personally at all and if airlines want to allow the use of mobies in flight, then what the hell

I take it that the people opposed to it would never use it themselves if it became permissible?

The only reason for their ban is due to safety concerns, if these have been addressed , then there is no justification to continue the ban ( othre than the airline wanting people to use the hideously priced airphones )

In-flight mobile phones

If I were still a corporate slave, I would be happy to avoid flights where I could have my cell-phone turned on: as it stands, being on a plane is about the only place where one can legitimately justify having the bloody thing swtiched off! Modern air travel is frought with distractions - why add one more? If you're so important that you can't afford to be out-of-touch with the office, I doubt you'll be on a commercial flight.

I see aeroplanes as no different to other public transports such as trains and busses and they are not banned there. air travel has just been a special case due to safety concerns
