I've checked in for my upcoming flight on my mobile and been sent a link with my boardin pass. Do I still need to grab a paper boarding pass from the checkin desks or can I use my phone at the gate?

You can use your phone provided it displays the barcode

Can it be used at OOL yet?

Sent from my iPhone using AustFreqFly app

I tried this a couple of weeks ago in BNE. It didn't work very well at the gate. On some smartphones the screen goes blank when it comes near the scanner, thinking you are putting the phone to your ear, hence causing difficulty with scanning the image.

Besides, the machine spits out a boarding pass at the gate anyway. You might as well just use the check in machine at the entrance.

That's because pax embarking through the rear stairs (or all pax, if there's not front airbridge) should be turning their phones off. They need something to present to FAs at the door (without waiting 60s for their phones to boot up).

QF mobile checkin also generates a "shopping docket."

I always feel a bit silly presenting my phone at the gate (im usually one of the only people doing so). I have to keep my screen unlocked (fortunately im PB) then I have to hand the phone over without pressing any buttons. It never scans quickly (the staff member usually needs to go over to the desk to do it) and then they spit out this tiny little receipt I have to hand to the FA.

Much easier getting a boarding pass at the Lounge.

Forgot about that! Guess it's been way too long since I walked across the tarmac to board a plane!

I had some experience recently with the iPhone and "passbook"
It worked pretty well, and passbook is designed to keep the screen bright and on until dismissed when you invoke it.
Both times I was printed the small, shopping docket style ticket to take on the plane with me, but I wasn't boarding via the rear stairs.

I'd still say I prefer the physical cardboard style (old school) boarding pass, to either the thermal printout sheets (i.e. air asia style) or the mobile app + stub thing.

The only thing I like about it is that I can easily check in while I'm travelling. I have (and will again) just asked lounge staff to print me a physical pass so I can get the best of both worlds...

Can't say I'm a fan - once the gate attendant gave my phone a good 'thunk' on the scanner. Glad I had a screen protector. Never again, back to printing them out the night before.
