I have a mixed fare type for a flight to Cairns in July. I suspect the flight may be cancelled by Virgin (if they are still around), but called Virgin to the understand cancellation terms as of present. They said it's outside of the COVID fare penalty waiver period, which I understood, but...

I asked if I cancelled now what would the penalty be....since I thought since one leg was an Elevate fare I would be credited that leg. But no, they said I would not be credited at all since credit/refund terms are based on the most restrictive leg for the booking (Getaway fare)...

Is this correct?

Hoping they extend the waiver period, otherwise I will need to change flight dates since a credit is not an option

Yes, most (all?) airlines have this* as one of their conditions of carriage.

* By 'this' I mean, conditions of the most restrictive fare in a mixed fare ticket applies to all sectors.

Exactly. There is no (financial) incentive to combine multiple sectors into one; but there is more flexibility if they are independent bookings.
