First, thanks to everyone who posts here, the collective knowledge is a great help to all long time lurkers like me.

There is a chance that I may need to travel from WLG to BRU in the next few months, and being a self funded flyer, like a lot of people here I love a bargain and love to fly in classes other than Y where possible.

I have had a bit of a go with Matrix and the cheapest J fare that I can find is about $9k (NZD) return utilising mostly Finnair. This doesn't seem like a terrible price by any means, but if at all possible I would like to work out a way to do it for less, but am unsure quite how to research it properly.

One thought I had was to take the longer legs in J and the shorter legs in Y or W (where available). Maximising SC's would be a great bonus (am currently QF SG) but I don't want to take four days to get there in either direction either if at all possible.

Does anyone have any suggestions or ideas for me to try? Thanks in advance for any help

You could probably go Y in one direction and J in the other, but I don't think the fares will let you mix individual segments throughout the journey...

I would be looking to fly economy to Hong Kong or Tokyo with Air New Zealand and then looking at business class onwards to Europe. Finnair, Qatar and Swissair would be reasonable carriers to look at for decent prices.

I booked a mixed fare with Qantas recently, flying disc whY from Isa to Sydney, then Y+ to the USA return them back to disc whY back home. Had to do it over the phone and cop the booking fee.

Tried to do a mix Y+/J last year to the US, couldn't be done via a travel agency, they contacted QF who said No.
Prehaps things have changed since..

NZ$9k wouldn't be too bad.

You could look at separate flights to/from Aus (in Y if you like) then J from there for a fractional improvement, or buy something like HKG-EU-HKG in J and a Y return to HKG (for example). You would need to have a decent stopover in HKG to "protect" yourself from a mis-connect if there were delays.
