Argh.. I am purging points quicker this month than I can earn them. Will miss Platinum by 1 maybe 2 flights. It continually slips through my fingers. Ironically, with my wife and daughters SC's I would romp it in but with next week's flights they will both get a status upgrades and their credits will no longer be available should the program changes we are eagerly awaiting actually happen any time soon. I will have to learn to be content I guess as some unique circumstances have put me within reach of Platinum. Gold is where I fit. :(

Is it worth the extra flight to get the Platinum benefits?

Many here would say yes.

Yes one FF i know took a flight to MEL-SYD-MEL just to make platinum. Got on the flight, landed, got out, check in, hop back on, back to melbourne. But he was only 20 SC short of plat. so it depends.

and YES platinum its worth it, gives you 4 free upgrades a year to J class!!

Some of us have been known to spend three days travelling in J ex BKK to HKG and SIN just to keep/achieve status, it was hard work, especially when the FA tucked my doona in on my lie flat bed .

3 days? I hope that was 3 return trips!

Certainly beats a Fiji run in (creaky old) Air Pacific J.

LOL I really do admire your passion for platinum :) I would do the same thing. I made a rookie mistake when I booked a discount economy ticket with Virgin Atlantic and didnt check to see if i could upgrade to PE or Y+ so i made just 30 SC for a transatlantic flight. But on the return leg, I rocked up to the check-in counter early and asked for a cash upgrade to PE (cost $270) and tripled the SC from 30 to 90 on the way to London. So instead of getting 60 SC, i got 120 SC, well if i didnt make that noob mistake, i would have had 180 SC, all for an extra $540, which I would have to spend around $1,100-$1,500 on domestic fares to rack up.
Then I got back and discovered I was 10 points short of gold, so I made a random return trip to Adelaide cheapy $79 fare, just so I could qualify for Gold (this was before Platinum was introduced).

And now im trying to reach platinum, and im seriously considering a MEL-PER-DRW on my next trip instead of flying MEL-DRW directly lol

Well today I found I am no longer going to be 1 or 2 flights short after all, when I discovered points + pay business flights earn..... nothing...... What a waste. :(

Have you already booked those flights? or travelled already?

Have now booked 2 savers and a flexi. This is not a business trip and can't afford much else at this point. Will upgrade the flexi to business for my wife who isn't well (long term) and my daughter and I will sit up back.

In the end this has cost $200 more than all of us flying business with points + pay but saves 20,000 points, which is insignificant. However, it will earn some SC's on all fares which is significant and I just can't come at ignoring.

You do understand with Virgin that you would have to have a seperate booking MEL- PER then PER DRW to get 160 SC other wise if you do the MEL PER DRW which I think is around an 8.30am dep from MEL with a connection to DRW you will only get 80SCs. If you need cheap status credits do a MEL OOL Return its $770 and you get 120SCs for the return that makes it $6.41 per SC. MEL to DRW is $7.46.
