Minimum connection time Sydney?

In J or Y?

There are flights every 2-3 hours tomorrow from SYD-PER with seats on all in Y although a couple of flights sold out in J.

They don't normally proactively rebook domestic connections and wait until actual arrival at the Qantas transfer area, they do this as it's never really known how long immigration, baggage reclaim and customs could be. It's worth noting it works both ways I've had bookings updated by the transfer area to fly ahead on an earlier SYD-BNE making my offical transfer time just 55 minutes.

Yet iv had the issue of getting to the domestic transfer terminal area with about a hour until the domestic flight departure. Being checked in, given boarding pass and luggage tags. To only get to the domestic gate and be told that they’ve given the seats away as they’ve thought me and a number of others wouldn’t make it.
Happened around 2 weeks ago after arriving on qf28 and connecting to qf1505.
Never happened to me before. After around 2hrs, they gave us hotel rooms and vouchers after initially saying to make the claims through travel insurance.

It's J. We have an estimated arrival time..not on stand time of 07.00. Coming from CDG via HND not really wanting a middle seat down the back!! 😕.

So bottom line I made it on board the PER flight. JAL Wheels down SYD at 07.00. JAL arranged for an airport authority provided escort! Met me on arrival..got off aircraft at 07.10...where whisked me through passport control (essential as was very busy), waited with me as bag came of carousel where she told me JAL had already requested the bin with my bag in it to be despatched first if that was possible..(I think the bag was within the first 50 out)...passed the non declare zone fast, and then moved to QF transfer desk which was not overly busy but straight to the desk for check-in. Through security on bus and at departure gate at 07.50. Without the assistance though, I reckon no chance! So it will be a 100 percent success if my bag makes it. Now Airbourne for PER.

In late 2019, I was connecting through NRT on JL (LAX-NRT-SYD). JL staff met me at the NRT arrival gate with a voucher and new boarding pass for SYD-CBR.
The LAX flight arrived on time, the aircraft for NRT-SYD was inbound and 3 hours late.

Sorry to bump an old thread, what's the latest info around the MCT for Sydney international to domestic on separate tickets?

I am flying into Sydney on NH879 and looking to make a QF redemption from SYD-MEL to get home, how many hours should I buffer for just to be safe?

Unlinked PNR, I would say 2.5/3/3.5 hrs.
But of course, the more hr between int & dom, the better as its unlinked.
They do not need to know you have come in on NH, they are more interested in your connecting QFd flight, so long as you have an etix for the dom sector, from T1 at SYD, you can use the transfer bus to T3, as you can get a BP printed once you land.
You can also also drop off your bags at T1 int -> dom bag drop too, ...
Main point is that NH arr early 7am (?) edit: 9.45am, then you have to contend with getting through immi and DAFF.

According to flightradar, NH879 arr at 10.10 or so on the 17th Jul.

Perhaps a bit of a controversial take, but I do wonder would it not make sense to simply book the flight down to Melbourne using points when you arrive in Sydney? That way you aren't panicked when it comes to making the connection. Surely there would be plenty of award availability either on QF or VA for SYD to MEL, particularly if you aren't travelling during a school holiday. Or am I missing something here?

A lack of SYD-MEL award availability is the issue here. I am arriving next Wednesday and QF only has 1 Y award availability at 8pm, and VA isn't any better as they don't have anything after midday, which feels a bit risky given the 9:45am arrival.

I guess a VA flex fare is also expensive? Keep your QF points? I have done once NH to VA with one pnr and it was quite seamless. Transit time was 2 hours thirty mins.

There is a JQd flight SYD -> MEL at 12.10pm and 12.40pm and a 2.40pm for the cousin airline.
$175 and you get a bit of QFF points and QFF SC.
20kg inc bags, Starter Plus.
Or go rev tix with QF if you dont want to wait too long, or not have enough time, with the QFd CR.
Book now fly now, in regards to CR or rev tix, can be risky/$$$ too, esp buy at airport and fly now at airport flight bookings.

If in the end its too much ($$$), maybe a bus coach like firefly express down to MEL?
Or the train, seeing you can go straight into Southern X, get the night XPT from SYD.
Turns out the night run on 30 Jul is all fully booked, for the train at least.
