Miles upgrade on Virgin Atlantic

Hey helpful peeps

I am flying from LHR to SYD on Sunday night with Virgin Atalantic and would very much like to use my stash of miles to get me in to Upper Class - at least for the Hong Kong to Sydney leg as I will be landing and going straight to work.

Been checking periodically with Flying Club but not joy

Any tips as to best way to secure an upgrade at the airport (with miles)? Get there earlz? Get there late?

I am Gold so don't mind getting there early if it'll help as I can entertain myself in the lounge
