Middle East Airspace Diversions/Cancellations

The Gulf War was a result of the invasion of Bahrain EDIT: Kuwait - thanks @antycbr by Iraq and involved major on the ground activities to eject Iraq from Bahrain and then the military defeat of Iraq on the ground.

So? That doesnt make my noting the duration of previous gulf war inaccurate.

Just because this conflict has started as a air attack, doesn't mean that it will neatly wrap up within a week as you are predicting; nor that even if the missiles/drones stop being launched that everything with be back to business as usual immediatly.

Iran's attack on civilian targets has already resulted in conflict expanding to neighbouring countries. I stand by my assertion that this could easily go on for the month as the yanks are predicting.

The drones Iran is using are very cheap to make, and they have been selling them to Russia who have been using them in the Ukraine, so their bank isnt limited to oil money.

Desperation leads to erratic tactics, we have already seen friendly fire and if commercial aviation resumes as quickly as youd like only a matter of time before we see tragedy.

Right now the whole of the ME is on the Do Not Travel list and that makes perfect sense to me.

In 2 hours, an update will be posted

I expect the same "Qatar Airways flight operations remain temporarily suspended due to the closure of Qatari airspace."
It's annoying that they post to Twot, as I deleted my account.
.
The information is available through their app and website, but it gives the impression there is more on X.

12 or so hours ago the date range extended to 6 March but now, as you said, extends to 10 March. I guess I'd better start looking for alternatives for 7 March, and cancel my Qatar flights for a refund.

Extra annoyingly all the booking engines still try to sell you flights through the affected countries.

My post was not political. I noted fact that conflicts often go on much longer than expected, yet some here expect commercial flights to resume now.

I predicted this will not all be resolved within a week, yet a certain poster chose to start talking about reasons for a prior war.

The fact is the Do Not Travel advice for the ME right now is no different to other destinations where there are active conflicts, this warning invalidates Travel Insurance. Those here with high tolerance for risk think this is unreasonable but it is a fact and thus travel disruptions to/via the ME will remain until this lifted.

Commercial aviation is not some how magically immune to accidents or deliberate acts of terror. Most airlines are quite sensibly taking actions to minimize this risk.

No. But its a different type of war- you might have compared it to WW2, a similar war of ejection of an occupying force.

Did I predict that? - I think I said if it goes beyond a week I'll ask my travel agent for 'Plan B' for my trip in 4 weeks. Has anyone said it would be business as usual immediately? I don't think so. But like the last, brief shooting match there, I think commercial flights will resume faster than expected.

You mean Smarttraveller/Dept Foreign Affairs? Saudi Arabia and Oman are 'Reconsider your need to travel' at the moment. I absolutely would have no hesitation to transit through Jeddah right now.

What about QF33 PER-CDG? No SIN detour for that service?
Planned without stop at the moment. Historically speaking, QF33 and QF5 have operated nonstop to Paris and Rome (respectively) during the times QF209 has been running.

Note also that QF209 is planned for just Wednesday and Thursday at the moment, at a guess possibly to do with destination fuel requirements (weather) on top of an already-longer track.

You may or may not be right. But at least you know what you are doing.

I truly hope my EY flight in 3 weeks is cancelled, so I can get on with my life. Note to self: avoid ME in future (similar to my note to avoid the Americas).

I guess I'll be holidaying in Merimbula for a little while, then.

That might change. Riyadh was attacked today.

This is not a “brief shooting match” like last time. Qatar has shot down Iranian fighter jets and missiles. Its closest ally. Reported that 3 gulf countries have agreed to join the US in an offensive role.

I can’t see this being resolved in a week.

With all the diversions for an undetermined time will the airlines have to have alternate routes semi permanently? Though Emirates will have issues won't they ?

I mean for the aust to other side of the world.

I wonder for people stranded in the Middle East, whether it is possible for Australia to try to send planes to MCT or DMM to evacuate them to safety?

DMM is 4 hours away from DOH on buses, and MCT is 5 hours away from DXB on buses.

Perhaps getting some cross border air replacement buses to those airports and then change for a connecting plane, stopping at Darwin then change for all ports in Australia might have helped?

This is not going to resoved, full stop. Airlines may fly, but now with a little risk.

Well, resolved to the point of flights resuming normal operations.

Can’t see it within a week. Getting stranded pax out is one thing, bringing in new ones is quite another.

From the ABC - doesn’t sound like the gov think it will end soon

Officials from the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) have been told to cancel all non-essential overseas travel as the government prepares for a potentially massive consular response in the Middle East.

Oman Air and Salam Air are running busses between Sharjah and Muscat for the next three days for passengers to be able to connect to services in Muscat.
