Middle East Airspace Diversions/Cancellations

This is going to get quite messy I think. Will be interesting to see how my Etihad flight goes in a few weeks time.

90 mins after it started, nothing on the QR or EK web sites . Sure, they are a bit busy, but its been brewing for a week and I'm sure the web guys aren't directing planes.

UAE now closed. Safe to say the whole area will grind to a halt with missiles reported intercepted in Doha, explosions on US base in Bahrain and now missiles have just been intercepted above Abu Dhabi in the past few minutes.

Be a few jets parked up down under for a few days it seems.

Must be a busy time for the controllers.
A couple of random plots - QR DOH -BCN was north of Kuwait, when it turned around.

Some Emirates flights to DXB now appear to be diverting.
Though the Sydney flight EK417 (delayed) still appears to be holding for a landing.

Some GPS spoofing also happening at DXB, with positions shifted out to N

Looks like it’s now returning alongside the other MEL-DOH flight within the vicinity.

EY461 is over South Australia still deciding it seems!

A huge number of cancelled flights will be coupled with high hotel occupancy rates as it's peak season for visiting the MIddle East (Nov-March).

How do airlines or individual travellers accommodate passengers or themselves if it's eventually close to impossible to find a hotel room?

The booking(dot) com still has 193 properties with available rooms in Doha. Amazingly, some are offering attractive rates per night. Will that last?

Perhaps there'll be prospective travellers camped inside 24 hour airports in the region. For their sakes, one hopes not.

Some media reporting that missiles have hit Dubai and 1 person killed in Abu Dhabi
You'd think, but not guarantee, these are Iranian missiles. Why would Iran be looking to exacerbate the situation with neighbours not yet involved.

Given the uncertainties around the ME and many people being reluctant to travel via the US. Pondering should QF be looking at 5th freedom flights AU-YVR-EU/UK or AU-JNB-EU/UK

Travel advice update

Qatar

There have been US and Israeli military strikes on Iran. There is a risk of reprisal attacks against US and Israeli interests in the Middle East, with further escalation of military conflict across the region. The security situation could deteriorate rapidly throughout the region.

The US Embassy in Qatar has issued a stay-in-place order for US personnel in Qatar, and have recommended American citizens do the same.

Prioritise your safety, monitor events and follow local advice. See our general advice on protecting your safety during an armed conflict.

Flight cancellations and disruptions could continue with little or no notice including due to airport and airspace closures.

We continue to advise exercise a high degree of caution in Qatar due to the security situation in the region.

The security situation in the Middle East is unpredictable. Conflicts in the Middle East could lead to an increase in tensions elsewhere in the region and may result in airspace closures, flight cancellations and other travel disruptions. Prioritise your safety, monitor events and follow local advice.

The Australian Government has offered voluntary departures for all dependants of Australian officials posted to Qatar in response to the deteriorating security situation in the Middle East.

Demonstrations and protest activity may also occur, and local security situations could deteriorate with little notice. Avoid all demonstrations and protests (see 'Safety').

We now advise:
Exercise a high degree of caution in Qatar.
