MH are promoting their A380 from KL to HK from May 1 - what are the economics of using such a large aircraft on what is a very short journey ?

SQ has been doing the same for some time now... I'd say that the revenues must more than make up for the costs of operating such short sectors compared to letting the aircraft sit idle on the tarmac in KUL/SIN in between long haul services.

They've obviously done the numbers, but I'd doubt if this is merely to fill space between long hauls, if only because the flight time plus turnaround in HKG will count for about 10 hours (counting a second turnaround back in KUL). They possibly intended the aircraft for another route that subsequently became less viable after they'd ordered, or perhaps they simply see demand on what is already a pretty heavily contested route.

It is a four hour flight, so not that short.

I speculate it is part slots at hkg which is constricted in peak periods, and part a point if differentiation to Air Asia
