According to Mr Thomas, the Ocean Shield and the HMS Echo have both left the search area “at speed” and sources had told him there was a possibility they had “triangulated” and located the black box.

Umm, why would they be leaving, especially Ocean Shield which has the submersible?

Because Mr Thomas doesn't know any more about what's happening with the search then the media does. He does not seem to be the "expert" the media makes him out to be and almost everything he says is his own personal opinion.

ie, he made something up because he didn't know.

You got that right.apparently Echo is now in the box and Ocean shield going back to the box at 2 knots-ie towing pinger.

Expert Thomas has no idea and is trying to generate his own "news" presumably so he can steal the march from other commentators with a "Look, you heard it from me first" position to enhance his reputation. A pretty cruel thing to do to those who have lost loved ones on MH370. Have a look at Pprune forums to see what pilots really think about this self proclaimed aviation expert.

Tony Abbott announces that the search area is getting smaller....
Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 black box in an area 10km by 10km | News.com.au

The MP told the President before a State dinner with the Australian premiers at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing — an unprecedented audience — that search teams led by the Australian ship Ocean Shield had narrowed down the area in the Indian Ocean where pings from the flight recorders are being received to a grid of around 10km by 10km.

If anyone is wondering, Ocean Shield has a 45 day mission endurance at present. Success topped up Toowoomba in the last few days:

Interesting, I hadn't thought of that side of things!

Is ocean shield able to take on provisions at sea?

Nice pic markis10.

Just an idle observation. The Success crew appear to be wearing green 'camo' (?) PFDs. Is this not a bit silly, especially in peace-time? If they go over, and need rescuing, surely they would want to be as visible as anyone else who needs rescuing from out of the sea?

The guy in the foreground appears to have Navy rank on his shoulders. Would his camo uniform be normal for sea operations?

The Navy has been wearing camos for a number of years now. As ex-RAN and a participator in a number of ex-Navy sites, non of us can understand why they wear "can't see me" suits at sea.

Mind you, I will say in the case of submariners, they must work as you can never see them!

It's just a uniform. <snip>

Sure is. I was just a bit surprised that the Navy felt the need to clothe its sailors so. I had a bit of a web trawl and as Ikara says, its been standard issue for a while  ! I should pay more attention to news reports on Operation Sovereign Borders :)

<snip> Anything to suggest the PFD isn't orange under the cover?

You mean when they inflate they rip through the green cover into fluorescent glory? Could do I suppose. Until then, the khaki cover looks good.

Given its helipad and normal role,

It will primarily be used to transport troops and supplies in support of humanitarian and disaster relief operations domestically and in the region.

...one would assume so, and moreso as there is a specialist resupply ship to do just that.

There's a lot of doubt about that.the particular journalist in the New Staits Times doesn't have a good track record for accuracy.
Over on PPRuNe it is felt that all it means is that his phone was not switched off.In fact all the posts mentioning this article have now been removed even the one where all his previous inaccurate thoughts were linked.
