We are planning an 280k Award trip and had originally earmarked Lima from LA. Earlier checks showing plenty of J seats availability, BA site often showing multiple seats on most dates.

Then as we are ready to book close to first release date, all these seats disappeared. Not sure because somehow ties in with school holiday?

As a consolation prize, decided to head to Mexico City from LA, seems like plenty of seats on AA. But have no idea what's there to do or see.

Anyone been there recently can provide some pointers for Sept visit?

Our trip was the week before Christmas so a bit cooler than now.
Stayed at Hotel Zocalo, walked out and we were right in the main plaza, perfect. They also have a great rooftop bar and restaurant with perfect views over the square so we used it a fair bit.
The hotel organised a trip to the pyramids for us, excellent day trip.
we used the hop on hop off bus for one day to get our bearings and while we don't usually do that, we thought it was worthwhile.
we used the local bus a few times and they have special bus lanes so they travel easily.
restaurants near the zocalo were really good
Museums ..... Anthropologie excellent and Bellas Artes well worth visiting.
depending on time, the district Coyocan is worth a wander, different to the middle of the city.

Hope this helps. Have sent my email address if you'd like greater detail. If you have time for a few more days, would totally recommend San Miguel de Allende but it's a 4 hour luxury bus drive away so not for a day trip. Beautiful small town though.

That's a great help, thanks so much.

Possibly follow your footstep for each of your outing, suits us down to the Tee.

And interesting coincidence, we joined AFF about the same time too.

Forgot to say, we spent 7 nights in the city and filled in the time very easily. We walked a lot and then often got transport back. We didn't use the subway a lot. It works well but is very crowded .... The doors close really quickly and I very nearly got left on it until the two men in my family yanked me out, nearly dislocating my arms! I prefer above ground! But that was the worst thing that happened. Huge police presence, so that either makes you feel very safe ...... Or you wonder if they know something you don't!

There's an excellent cafe just off the Zocalo where we often had breakfast. It's called MUMEDI Museo, Museum of Mexican design, AV Francisco I Madero, very close to Zocalo, and the front section of a modern art gallery. Really nice with lovely shop attached selling Mexican modern designed things!

And the Gran Hotel with its huge Tiffany glass ceiling is well worth a look on a sunny day, very impressive. Better than going there at night.

Yes, I use this site a bit and have found some useful tips!

Have a great time.

Was there in April and loved it. Safe, stylish and cheap. There is so much to do. You could easily spns a week and not touch the sides. I caught the metro every where. I even squeezed in a world cup qualifier at the Azteca. Only time I didn't catch the subway is from and to the airport because those lines are patrolled by opportunists, I even saw them in action when en route to somewhere else.

MC has a thriving food culture. Never eaten so well. There ae about 4 of the world's best restaurants peppered around town which is almost worth the trip alone. Degustation and wine for $80 per person. You can't even find ghat in Asia.

It belongs in the pantheon of mega cities and is a place all Aussies should try. Speaking a bit of Spanish helped me a lot. English is not widely understood. Stick to the tourist areas and you'll be fine. Go with an dmpgy suitcase and your senses wide open. MC has something for everyone! (Search under lunarboogie for my handful of reviews on TripAdvisor if you want more info).

Subscribing. Have been researching Mexico ... looks like a good option for Xmas 17.

Thanks to both of you for the positive feedback.

Looking forward to Mexico, sounds far more exciting than Lima, climbing all over the mountain :) to see some ruins!

Peru was fabulous too ..... very different to MC though. Go there another time! My partner walked the Inca Trail while I thoroughly enjoyed the extra days in Cusco, then joined him at Machu Pichu. Once in a lifetime experience whereas most other places I could imagine returning to, including MC. There's nothing quite like travel.

I've been warned off Mexico, which I had previously visited 10+ years ago. It was the first place to open my eyes to how amazing our world is & how lucky we are to have the opportunities without having to try to dig our way into another country. Also did a cruise, getting a chance to visit & experience so much culture. I miss going there every time I travel to the states, but after reading the recent reviews, I'm going to reconsider if there is a safer way to travel there.

Thanks for sharing :D
