Ok, from wiwpedia but nonetheless:
Longest of the two parallel runways 12966ft/3952m (SYD longest is 13000ft)

From Great circle mapper: LHR-MEX is 5541mi; MEX-SYD is 8068mi; LAX-SYD 7488mi So SYD-MEX is actually 580mi farther, not shorter.

Might be a goer with a 787-9 but it's still going to have payload restrictions on the return MEX-SYD.

Just for interest...

Even SYD-MEX (8068) is slightly over MEL-LAX (7921).

As doc says, maybe the 787-9, but the payload restrictions may not make it viable.

And an additional consideration for MEX-SYD (which is generally operated with a head-wind) is the elevation of MEX airport and the limitation that imposes on take-off performance, especially during summer. The fact that departures would likely be late evening will help as temperatures would be lower, reducing slightly the performance impacts of the high elevation airport.

LAX is basically at sea level, while MEX is over 7000 feet elevation.

Would the QF 744/744ER (or 380) have the legs given the restriction on TOW out of MEX (given the altitude)? There'd also be a landing weight restriction as well.

LOL I think i got that.

Good point about air temp, although it can be pretty hot in LA in summer too. Winds are going to be roughly equivalent.

Mexicana targets growth despite short-term challenges

From ATW Daily News:

Mexicana is pursuing plans to renew its long-haul fleet and is continuing talks with both Airbus and Boeing for six A350s or 787s, Grupo Mexicana CEO Manuel Bora told ATWOnline last week in Mexico City, although he does not expect the carrier to turn a profit this year.
