Any chance that this might happen once the direct Sydney - London flights start? It’s a bit of a shocker that passengers from Australia’s biggest city would be forced to go via Perth or Sydney, and Qantas will have vacant slots in LHR and SIN.

Wishful thinking I know…

I’m not sure I understand what the issue/problem is. It’s a competitive landscape and you have the option of flying to London via any number of different cities and routes, depending on which airline you choose.

I live in Melbourne and I do understand the frustration that so often Qantas is more “Sydney Airlines” than “Australia’s national airline”, but seriously if we don’t like it we should vote with our feet. In any case, what’s the problem with flying QF35 or QF 37 to SIN and then hopping onto QF1 from there?

I was a big fan, and user of the old QF9 which left Melbourne at midnight and arrived into Heathrow at 2pm. That timing worked well and hopefully they will bring that back using the A380s. There's no way I would use the current QF9.

Assuming you mean once Qantas Sunrise flights start.

If they don't add MEL-LHR once the SYD flights are going, Melbourne folks will continue to go with their wallets and convenience.
A one stop connection in Singapore (or a number of other routes) is way better than Sydney.

Is there range anxiety with MEL-LHR ?
land rights for straight whales have more chance of that is the case

Or are we asking to defy physics ?

I’m just wondering if, once Sydney to London via Singapore disappears, Qantas might consider a similar flight from Melbourne.

I guess they won’t want to butcher their premium direct services from Perth and Sydney, but that’s a lot of lost QF capacity to Europe if they only have those two low capacity flights.

As above you can today with QF37 to QF1 and QF2 to QF36 on the return. And similar with flights from BNE, DRW, PER.

It's expected the first Sunrise flight will likely be SYD-LHR and then SYD-JFK (just because of how the timings work). And then probably then MEL-LHR.

In that time between there might be some juggling of what is that consolidating flight, but it's only a flight number.
Ultimately it's expected QF will have three direct flights to LHR (from PER, SYD and MEL) and one consolidator via SIN.
(QF own four slot pairs at LHR with two currently leased to BA, though may need to do some slot trading)

That was QF29 via HKG?
No, it was QF9 via Dubai. Leaving Melbourne at midnight meant I could fly down to Melbourne and get a days work done, before arriving into Dubai at 6am, and then on to Heathrow at 2pm. I could do that run and function at the other end. Even going via Singapore would-be ok, with a mid afternoon arrival. Getting in at 6am is the pits.

People are used to one stop service

Even with the current QF9 And Paris

They’re not used to non-stop at 125% of existing price

If it’s the business crowd the PAX is not paying so they don’t care about price.
Fact is 15% of PAX choose QF over any other long haul airline and they still want a price premium

Right, exactly. So will Qantas continue to anchor QF1 and QF2 in Sydney? That’s my question. It would seem logical to switch it to Melbourne once the direct flight from
Sydney commences.

QF1/2: SYD-LHR-SYD
QF81/82: SYD-SIN-SYD
QF35/36/37/38: consolidated into MEL-SIN-LHR-SIN-MEL?

As I said it's only likely a temporary situation as QF receives its 12 350 Sunrise aircraft ,and it's only a flight number. Who knows what will happen and to be honest, who cares.

Fyi at one point QF had a single flight number SYD-LAX-JFK but it was an A380 for the first leg, and then a 787 (that had flown BNE-LAX)

Yep, that’s what I’m thinking/hoping. At least until a Project Sunrise flight from Melbourne to Europe starts (if it does).

QF1 and 2 are the same aircraft all the way, correct? So more than just a flight number. Even if different aircraft, the connection is prioritised. And a single flight number would allow simpler booking etc
